Aluminum ground plane

Yep. Another coil on that Super mag, tapped in the right spot, and it would be back on the air. Too much aluminum to sit unused!
Yup, just duplicate the original coil with #10 wire, if you can. You might have to enlarge the original plastic cylinder. You might also have to locate the 50 ohm tap by trial and error. I've done that with coil-type 5/8 wl. antennas.

That brings back memories. I got my first summer job in th early 70's just so I could buy a Super Mag and 75' of RG-8.
In the fall of 1966, I met some local CB'ers in my high school (fellow students). I helped Steve put up his CLR-2, while Dave already had his "Super mag" up in the air. Howard who went to a neighboring high school also had a CLR-2. I, being impecunious (i.e.: poor) originally had a dipole. Eventually I did put up a 1/4 wave GP. But I did have my trusty DX-100(!!!) while all the others had lowly Hallicrafters CB3-A's. Heh heh... Guess who was the "Channel Master"??? ;)

antenna specialist might magnum III

good evening i recently picked up a might magnum III from a dumpster of a roofing company that was working on a house around the coner from me , the only problem is that the second section was bent in half and broke beyond repair i was wondering is i could just cut out the break if i do this i will lose about 2 ft off the lenth of the antenna i know this will effect the swr but do you think it will tune ? also it did not have the ground radials but has the bracket if i want to add some what type of material and lenght and diameter suggested than you for your time joe kd2aag

You better believe it will lose its tune if you shorten its length.
Bad radio operator; no cookie for you.

The BEST thing you can do for it is to straighten it out.

The radial lengths are probably 104 inches each. Copper, steel, or aluminum 3/8 or 1/2 inch tubing can be used.

If possible get as much straight as you can, and cut out the kinked part splicing it back together with additional material. If you can not do that, cut out what you can and ass the length back to the top end.

The length of the vertical element is important as it determines the resonance of the antenna. (and subsequently, it's SWR). Try to keep it to it's original; length. You can additional aluminum tubing as required. The M-M-III is a good antenna, well worth restoring. It's a true 5/8ths, which exhibits real gain, about 3.2 dB over a half-wave antenna.

Replacing the damaged section is a good idea. It's good for two reasons, one to keep the possibility of it being resonant, the second for mechanical strength.

Sorry, but if you'll define that 3.2 dB as 'dBi', then I'd go along with it. A 5/8 wave antenna just isn't going to have 3.2 dBd on it's best day. If you adjust that 3.2 dBi to real world numbers you have about 1.2 dBd of gain, which is normal for any 5/8 wave antenna. Is that nit-picking? Nope, just honest.

You are correct, Sir! I don't know why I wrote that. A 5/8ths w.l vertical co-linear exhibits 3.2 dBi gain. Where a 1/2 w.l length dipole exhibits approximately ~2.dBi (+/-) over an isotropic source.

i thank you all for your repiles i know it easier to bprobly would be to buy a new one but i just dont have too much to spend plus there is something about just rebuilding things that intrest me (y) m next question is the metal angle brackets are pretty well pitted since this has been up on this roof for aslong as i can remember i know i could probly sandblast the brackets but they will still be pitted , could i replace them with aluminum angle with the same demensions or will this hurt the performance of the antenna

Every person that posted doesn't want you to quit this antenna.

I had a 4 element beam that fell down and was all bent up. Didn't stop me; I just took the whole thing apart and carefully straightened each part individually. Didn't take that long either. Did it carefully and I came up with an antenna that you couldn't even TELL that it had an accident.

You can do it.

well what in did was hit the home depo i cut out thr bent part since i could not straighten out the bent part due to it being toren apart i cout out just the damaged part at the most it ended up being 2" i purchased a small section of 3/4 " copper pipe and slide it into the 2 sections of the aluminum pipe drilled 2 small holes and added 2 small sheet metal screws i havent put it up im still trying to clean up the steel angle brackets (getting as much rust off as possible) i was going to replace it with aluminum angle , but i want to make sure it works before i invest anymore money . i was looking at the 1/2 copper for the ground radials but it just looked like it was too big i couldnt find any 3/8 found some 1/4 tubing but too much money for now also was looking at the soild ground wire looks like it will work want too ask yalls opion for the radials maybe some other ideas also to the next post thank ou joe haas jr kd2aag
