New Unidens coming!

Dude, I've been wishing for that for years.

Sorry, but they are lame looking.

IDK, they're not that great, but at least some manufacturers today are trying to get away from those big-ass silver-faced trucker rigs that have been around non-stop for the last 40 years or so. They often might be built well and talk like crazy, but they are ugly as sin to me.. I'm embarrassed to put one in my car. They look OK in a truck I guess, but in a car they are too bulky and old-looking IMO, sort of like the way those big silver and woodgrain Pioneer and Panasonic home stereo receivers from the late 70s and early 80s look old-fashioned compared to modern 7.1ch systems.. Also, my car interior isn't covered in distasteful amounts of chrome, so most of the better CB radios would stick out like a sore thumb. Then when you take today's trend of having RGB LEDs color-cycle with each keyup things go from obnoxious to raverific, which is especially weird since I don't know too many CBers that go to raves and pop ecstasy pills.

Most cb radios are embarrassing to be mounted in our modern cars. Atleast the clear channel and rci's don't look too bad.

When will these new unidens be available ?

Form Follows Function.
Radio controls need to be easy to access and clearly defined.
Making them too much like a car stereo might also mess with that 'form/function' thingie.

If an operator can use a software-defined radio (whose form and function reside entirely on a computer screen) and make great QSOs, or use mobile HF rigs like the 706, whose form and function are limited to an LCD screen and minimal knobs, then I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that CBers could still use more modern looking rigs to make great contacts too. Too much weight on a trivial thing IMO.

At the end of the day, though, it's all about personal taste, and as long as the manufacturers are making money that's all that matters. They're just not getting any of mine is all.

Most real CBers would rather have a LOUD ugly radio than a meek sounding beautiful radio.

Your qualifiers are "in the eye of the beholder" though. What defines a "real" CBer? When I cut myself I bleed, so I think I'm real not imaginary.

Also, what defines a beautiful radio? To some, the chromed out atrocities (IMO) that I describe are beautiful, to others not so much. Also, there are plenty of beautiful (IMO) radios out there that have nearly perfect modulation, both on the scope and to the listener. Not CBs, of course, but amateur rigs.

Menu driven radios are the future IMHO and I agree that the manfactures should move towards DIN style radios.
There is a new radio that is in the works from ranger baised on a new board that will be much smaller. Sure there is still a market for the cobra/connex style radios but if uniden would build a all mode radio that has the stabilty of the grant with a remotable face I think there is a viable market for it.
Nothing wrong with a radio that blends in rather than sticks out.

The only SSB offering from President is the Jackson II, a disappointment when compared to the old school Jacksons. The Lincoln II is several years behind schedule and plans might have been scrapped. With the legalization of SSB on the CB band in Europe (except the 26 and 19) a new model may be in devolopment but I'm sure they would be overpriced for what they are, like the entire President line.

Sadly since the introduction of rohs, president ssb radios have fallen by the wayside, but not nearly as damaging as their prices which have rocketed, unless they get their finger out soon in balaruc with their prices and some decent ssb radios, the future could be very glum for them.

i heard talk of grant 2's and lincoln 2's but so far nothing, they seem content on rehashing am/fm models to death and charging the earth for what is basically useless without ssb.

a modern washington style radio would be nice, or even a return to the grant/jackson style. something the size of the president harry with ssb might have major appeal for modern cars that lack space.

I 2nd that - the technology is there and they should be able to make a small all mode model with stability and software controls. If Icom can make a $600 all mode radio with DSP than I think certainly they can make a $300 all mode CB for one band or a export model. Hell a lot of hams would buy a quality $300 10-12 model, many I've met run 2510's, 2950's, 257's, and HTX-100/10's.

AS FOR DATES ON THE NEW RADIOS FROM UNIDEN - what I've been told

Uniden 505XL - Oct

Uniden 680 - Nov

Uniden 880 - Dec
