Hi. I am wondering the all the things to know when considering buying a Power Supply? I want to upgrade my 3 amp 12v. Radio Shack PS that I runs my 30 watt mobile radio and, a amp that I have yet to buy? Any input of what amp to get for the best bang for the buck? I have a restored Sigma 4 Clone antenna (CTE LW 150) with 100' of LMR for a feed line. This setup talks coast to cost on skip. I only want to spend maybe a few hundred bucks? Thanks for L@@KING ! ! !

re

you should run at least a 10-12 amp power supply on that radio.
astron is very good. tripplite-

How much power supply (how large) you need depends entirely on how much current will be needed by all the things connected to it. One way of determining that is by just adding up the fuse sizes, add a few amps for an 'over-head'. The larger that 'over-head' the better off you will be, you could add a few more gadgets with no problem (there'll always be just one more thingy that you wish you could add, you know?).
There are two ratings for power supplies. One tells you the constant current supply (CCS) the thing will put out all day long. The other tells you how much 'surge', or intermittent current supply (ICS) it will handle. That ICS is always more than the CCS, and is the most common rating shown for power supplies, the one you usually see quoted in catalogs. That ICS rating is only what the thing will supply for VERY short periods of time, as in a second or two. That CCS rating is the biggy, what it will do for almost ever with no problem. The difference between the two is something on the order of 30 to 50% (there's no particular 'standard' for that difference). So it amounts to "bigger is better" until it get's absolutely ridiculous.
Good luck.

I would get 2 supplies. One for the radio one for the amp. Astron SS-18 is what I run radios with. For a bigger supply for a amp a 35 or 70 amp astron regulated based on size of amp you want. I dont mind a switching suppy for the smaller ones and mine dosent make any hash. Xforce b bias or Texas Star if wanting to run a moble in the house.

AMPS

I am not very technical but I have bought for $55.00 a MEGA WATT S 350 12 It is a 12 volt 33 amp switching supply that I run my Cobra 148GTL and my RM ITALY KL 203 off this one supply and it does it EFFORTLESSLY! They sell them on eBay constantly. It is a little primitive in it's outer design but it is small, quiet and just over all great!

Bigger is better

I bought an MFJ switching PS and the fan is noisy 25 amp for my ranger 2950dx I like the dual meters and the lights. but noisy. And Booty Monster is right I bought a second supply for my TS 350hdv, Iota DLS-55 quiet fan runs quiet Runs the amp eaisly and was cheap. No on off switch or meters. I use a powerstrip to turn on and off. also has a plug so you can boost the voltage a little. check the reviews on eham.net
