is there a reason why t seems I get a lot of lookups on QRZed after transmitting cq calls but I am not getting any responses? is my antenna too weak? am I transmitting further than I can hear? random skip?

I would hate to think I am transmitting over some one's calls that I can't hear. I don't want to be the rude guy with no ears.

I am using an imax 2000 antenna and an RCI-2950 dx as my station. any advice would be appreciated.

thats pretty common, I OFTEN look up a call before I answer their CQ, many times, I will just spin the VFO

I do it all the time, that is lookups without any replies which in your case could be good or bad.

Good being someone just looking to find your qth for propagation checks the other being some jackass looking to start some shit because he thinks you did something stupid like not giving your call sign when he thought you should and is gonna turn you in to the rf cops.

What mode are you using?

You should first try scanning the band for other people and make a contact that way.

10 meter has rolled off a bit.

Conditions a few weeks ago were pretty good but it has gone away so it may just be as simple as that.

Have you listened for any 10 meter beacons?

10 METER BEACON LIST

I have never worked beacons and am unfamiliar with them at this point. I wouldn't know how to access them or do anything with them and I don't want to mess up.

at least there are reasonable explanations why I am not hearing the replies. hopefully I am not stepping on anyones toes.

I doubt its the callsign thing becasue I start all cq calls "cq cq cq this is KB1WLS (Kilo Bravo One Whiskey Lima Sierra), new technician looking for contacts can anybody copy" I also listen for a minute or two before cqing and after a minute or two ask if the freq is in use 3 times before I call out cq.

You don't "work" propagation beacons. You listen for them as an indicator of band openings to where ever the beacon is located. Most transmit 13 wpm morse code with the station ID and location.

don't worry about it,..... what you are doing sounds just fine to me.

I make it a point to answer new operators CQ's,................ other people make it a point NOT to answer them:bdh:

While calling cq are you on USB?

As for the beacons, you just tune around the frequencies listed and see if you can hear them. That will give you an idea of where you will be hearing stations.

If you hear no beacons, there is a good chance that the conditions are not present and you will not hear anyone.

I always answer new and old call signs

Go to 28.300 USB and set your cursor on the 2950DX under the second zero after the 3.

You can adjust the squelch so the static just disappears and then hit scan

Myself, I scan to 28.600 then start the scan back to 28.300

If you hear a station, stop the scan and listen.

I always write down their call sign first, then if they are looking for calls, you will hear them talking and give their call "this is bla bla bla" QR Zed

When you hear them say QR Zed, announce your call sign once and listen to see if they acknowledge. Then start talking.

good luck

WLS: (I Love that call!)....Not sure what your using for a rig but, Just a simple: "Is this frequency in use?" KB1WLS....maybe twice...( I normally would)...if hearing nothing Just a simple: cq x (2-4) times and Your call...then listen...no reply in 10-15 seconds...call again....

Other wise just dial-up and down the band and listen you'll find someone to chat with...
If you find someone chatting and you can hear "both sides" wait for a pause then simply say your call and wait to see if they acknowledge you....
10 meters can be "Very Lopsided" sometimes...Just because someone is "big"...does not mean you will be the same to them...

But 10m when it's really "Hot"

5 Watts is as good as a KW!
Enjoy...take your time listen around...Wait : at some point you'll be the vocal point of a "pile-up"....and you'll be sweating blood! :w00t:

Enjoy

thanks for the rest of the advice that is what I have been doing scrolling up and down listening for the qrzed and trying to chat to them. so far mostly contestors. I basicly wanted to make sure I wasnt doing anything wrong or maybe had my radio set wrong.

it sounds like I am fine and just need to hit a lucky roll to get some one that wants to talk and not just log a new contact.

thanks for the info.

I love my call sign too, "Keep Bragging 1 Woman Loves Sex" "Keen Bastard 1 Wiskey, Less Seltzer" there are tons for WLS just cant go wrong there. LOL

wooo hoo hit three solid contacts in tennesee, south dakota, and florida, it was awesome and then the band started to fade out. I'm excited now in my hand written log it no longer says "(insert random callsign) heard but no contact"

I need a better way to log calls

well, Eric,.... it's 1200 local and I can hear you on 28.350, here in south flor-iduh.

you are weak (most of the time), so I am waiting for the band to open a bit before I give you a call.

my tower is down at the moment and all I have up is my 75 meter doublet, loaded up on 10 thru a tuner,..... :D soooo, .......we will see if you will be able to hear me.

as i am typing this , the band died. you just faded away,............ oh well, thats 10.
