I earned my Technician last Spring and for Christmas I got myself an FT-8900R Quad Band (10, 6, 2M and 70 cm) FM unit (which I have setup in my house, not mobile). Since I've only have the Technician and I want to use the entire coverage of the radio, I am getting ready to take the General. In studying for the General I discovered that you can't operate FM below 28.5.

I want to make sure I'm understanding this all correctly and that I can't legally operate the radio in the only part of the band that I'm legally authorized to operate (at least until I pass the General). Do I have that right? If that is the case, why does Yaesu offer the radio with this configuration? I know, its not SSB, so who am I going to talk to anyway...

If all goes well, by tomorrow afternoon, I'll be able to operate above 28.5.

For the most part the Tech portion of 10 meters 28.300 to 28.500 is ssb voice,I am not saying there isnt any FM users in that portion of the band,I just havent heard any personally... the FM portion of 10 meters is usually found from 29.000 to top of band.....

I would say if you can find someone using FM in the tech portion of the band go for it

Good luck on passing your general!
as for 10m FM when conditions are here, i have listen on FM with hearing no one. i had pretty much forgotten about 10m FM use. hihi silly me 73s

Good question. I've always thought this was an odd little radio and usually steer people in other directions. It can be fun to work the FM repeaters and FM simplex when the band is open, though.

Congrats....

KJ6OOH /AG Good for you. Congrats on your upgrade to General class and passing the test.
