is there an easy way to lower the dead key on a ts480sat? It wont go any lower than five watts. Just wondering if it can be done.

I'm sure it can be lowered. But, why would you want to?
The TS-480SAT is a very nice rig. I have only used it on AM
a few times. Everyone said it sounded just fine.
You'll have to find a service manual . There is one available
online. It does included a lot of useful info including alignment
information.
Personally, I'd leave it where it is. If you are wanting to run
QRPp......(less than one watt) then look at some of the MFJ
mono-band rigs or even some of the kit radios out. Some of
those can go down to 100Mw or less.
Good luck.

You can lower the am carrier. It is done in the service menu. Keep in mind, the rig will still modulate up to what it would normally, So be sure to set the proc and gain so you dont overdrive the audio. I dont remember off hand, but I know you short out two pins in the data connecter and hold two buttons when you turn the rig on. Just Google ts480 service menu

Update.. I made a shorting jig and got into the service menu, it was pretty easy. When you do this you have to be careful not to change any thing except what you want to. I would suggest writing down what the manufacturer had them set to. As for my experiment it did not go well. Lowering the dead key was easy, you can lower it all the way down to nothing if that's what you want. Now for the bad it really screws up the audio, so bad you hardly understandable. So i had to raise my carrier back up to almost where it was to start with. Also to who ever was worried i was going to use a low drive cb amp. Ham radio and radio in general is a lot about experimentation, some things work and some things don't. This one did not go very well, but if i wish to use a cb amp i will. Thanks to those who tried to help it was much appreciated.

I only mentioned that because a friend of mine sold a 2 month old FT-950 that was modified for CB use to an old goofy CB operator. Well, he hooked it up to a crappy solid state amp. POOF! his 950 has no transmit now. Very expensive mistake.

Not saying you will do the same. Also, don't care what you do. I experiment also.

There are a lot of things that you can screw up in that service menu, not just the carrier/modulation levels. Best advice is if you don't know exactly what you are doing, don't go there. There's no 'leeway' with that menu, no 'fudge' room at all.
