i seen where people were talking about frying your base by keying your mobile up to close too it. how many watts would it take to do that? because i have lots of radios in my radio room some very expensive. i often switch out and talk on different radios but i never take any of the other radios out when i'm not using them. so i always have like 10 radios right next to the radio thats "hooked" up. the most power i ever have is like 500 watts. but my galaxy 98 VHP is always sitting right next to the radio i am using. of corse my antenna is outside.should i only have the radio i am talking on at the time in the same room. cause i REALLY don't want to fry or hurt in any way any of my radios. what should i do? is 500 watts even enough to fry anything? please tell me your thoughts? thank you very much. i can't afford to fix radios cause i brunt them up

I've heard lots of stories from people about this happening to people they knew but never heard about it from anyone that actually had it happen.
I'm not saying it can't happen, there's always the possibility of blowing the front end diodes or some little doodad.
There's no telling the number of times that I have had multiple radios on, some even on the same frequency (connected to different outside antennas that were very close together) while transmitting well in excess of amateur power limits never mind cb power limits since the 1970s and I have never once "fried" a radio or even blown a front end diode.
Knock on wood..... I guess I'm lucky

Always make sure the Coax switch GROUNDS the unused terminals and Look for ones that are built well.
A good coax switch will have good isolation from one terminal to another when switched.
As for the OP`s Question.....
The radio setting on the desk unhooked should be fine.
I run the station in the house with my mobile sitting right outside in the driveway, never even think about it.
Now if a guy in a Semi pulls up next to you running a KW, you might have a problem.......

Unless someone running 5000 watts mobile is in your driveway, don't worry about it.
I had someone running a Davemade 8 pill right next to me in a keydown contest blow my radio up......blew the final and predriver out but that was 30 ft away. Asshole didn't pay attention to the guy running the keydown. Thank goodness for parts radios.
In most examples it's the receive that can be damaged. An RCI 2950 for example will get front end overload, most of the time it will recover in 30 seconds.
