Sirio Tornado 27 Antenna

I just picked up a new Sirio Tornado 27 antenna, I have not put it up yet but was wondering if it will work with out the ground radials? I just do not have the room for the radials at the location where it will go any feed back is much appreciated.
 

Most base antennas can be tuned to work without the radials. You are changing the design characteristics of the antenna, as well as the radiation properties when not using them.

Can you still make it work? Likely yes.

Will it work as well? Likely not.


You can always try it and see how it works...

Thanks for the reply and your input, the problem I am having is a month ago my Imax that was on my roof got a direct hit by lightning so my fiance flipped out and does not want another antenna on the roof so right now I have my back up A99 on a pole in the yard. I got the Sirio Tornado that I have not put up yet and noticed that I will not have the space for the radials. I was hoping it would work and that it would work better than A99 with out the radials.
 
If you make changes in the way an antenna is designed and put together then expect there to be 'problems' with that antenna. It could still be made to work, probably, but expecting it to be as 'good' as before it was 're-designed' isn't very likely.
If an antenna (however it's made) doesn't 'fit' where you want to put it, then that antenna just isn't your best choice, now is it? Doesn't matter how 'fantastic' the thing may be, if it doesn't 'fit', then it's not going to do you much good.
The 'trick' is to figure out the limitations for placing an antenna, finding one that 'fits' those limitations. that's the antenna that's 'best' for your particular situation.

I see your point, well I could try shortning the radials they are adjustable, this loaction is the only place where I can put up an antenna where my fiance is at ease. The A99 on a 18 foot pole is working fine but figured the Sirio would work better just didnt realize the radials would have been a problem. I dont want to go with another fiberglass antenna and the Sirio is super lite so easier on the mount.

I looked at the Gain Master but wanted to go with an Aluminum. I already got the Tornado and opened the box. I will try and see if it works next week without the radials. My major concern is SWR with out radials. I am thinking that if the SWR's are good without the radials then hopefully it should work slightly better than the A99 since its 6 feet taller.
 
After removing the radials you can likely tune for resonance or SWR, however almost no chance at both at the same time. The radials are part of the matching system that allows both good SWR at near resonance. By removing them you are in effect changing that system, and a pretty drastic change at that. I wouldn't even attempt to try and tune it without an antenna analyzer.

Come to think of it I'm not familiar with an aluminum antenna offhand that doesn't come with radials of some sort.

I thought I would have the room for it, now I realize that I dont. The Sirio will fit if I make the radials short they are adjustable from 4 feet to 6 feet. I will try it with 4 feet and see what happens.
 
4' may work, and will work better then none. I'm curious where are you mounting the antenna? These antennas are designed to be up above buildings, where are you mounting it that it doesn't have room for 6' radials.

Its being mounted on a pole in yard which will be close to the house,I cant go up to high cause my fiance is nervous about getting it hit again by lightning.
 
Do what you want with the antennas and experiment. Who cares what the naysayers say. The fun is experimenting!!!
