I am thinking about getting an amp to run with my Magnum 257HP. I know since my radio puts out quite a bit of power, that I cannot run any of the smaller amps. FWIW my radio has a variable dead key from 5 watts on up to 15 and swings to 75 watts or so.

I thought maybe looking into a Fat Boy amp with 4 2879's would be good...? Thoughts?

Texas Star makes a 4 X 2879's class AB-1 I belive with ssb delay and variable power. you looking for AM olny AM with SSB...... If you get class C it will not be as clean, it depends what you want to do with the amp. You need to give more info and I am not the best to give you a good answer. But you came to the right place to ask questions.

You're right. I forgot to mention I plan to do both SSB as well as straight AM. So I read a class AB amp would be better than a class C on SSB. Are any of the Fat Boy amps class AB?

Amp

A TNT 350 would work great with that radio on both AM & SSB it is "B" biased built in fan too, nice solid amp, check out their site for specs, nice people to do business with too I have a couple of them that have performed very well for years now. Widowmaker

I have an S45HP and the 257HP, and use a Texas Star DX500 non variable. Very nice combo for AM and SSB.
