Recently have been receiving a "out of lock signal "? It is a decimal point on the led channel readout only but the manual says that this decimal disables the synthesizer output and lights the out of lock LED located on the channel number display and will disable both the receiver and transmitter, if , for some reason the synthesizer is not properly phased locked ????
anyone here know how to trouble shoot this big problem because half of my channels have this out of lock signal and they are simply disabled....problem problems problems this makes my Yaesu FT 747GX looking more better and more better and more better
It seems like the channels that have this decimal signal are not transmitting or receiving not 100 eper cent sure but would appreciate any help or point me in right directions
Thanks

You need to find a service manual and have someone "try" to do an alignment of the synthesizer in the radio that is located behind the channel display.
It is a old radio and some components may be out of spec due to age and this is possibly what is causing the out of lock condition.
The FS 2340 was built right at the time the FCC switched from 23 to 40 channels, and that radio was basically a 23 channel crystal controlled rig that had a factory conversion done to make it a 40 Ch rig.
The one`s I have seen, including the one I had used a sticker that was put on the front panel that covered the FS-23 with the new model number FS-2340
At that time Sonar did not use a single PLL like a 02A or a 858, there are half a dozen or so discrete IC`s on a couple of boards behind the channel control that make up what is now inside a single chip.
Anyone of them or associated components could be going bad.
Hopefully someone like Chris at Nomad Radio will see this post and might know a common fault with this radio and can help, but that radio is a rare bird.
You might also try to contact Barkett Electronics, they might be able to provide repair on a radio of that vintage.
Good Luck on getting it going, they are neat old radios.

Thanks Jeff i found a cber in LA who who was reccommened and he has a flat rate on these old tubers and verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry cheap the logistics will cost more than the fix and couple mods

If the PLL will lock on some channels and not on others, there probably are no defective components and the trouble is a simple alignment of the VCO stage within the PLL.

Your were right here is what he found wrong with the locked out channels?
Replaced a leaky Tantalum capacitor and both electrolytic capacitores in Synthexizer /PLL unit.
Installed two Mods for me:
HI/LO power switch : switch up gives me 6 w carrier/swings to 12w
switch down gives me 3w carrier/ swings to 12w
Speech Compressor by pass switch using shielded audio line to compressor board:
Swithch up: normal 100 per cent modulation stock as a box of rocks
Swithc down : Asymmetrical compressed audio output max nice and LOUD!!!!! Negative modulation at a minimun and positive modulation approaching 200% excepational audio
Great tech and very reasonable . sop far all repoarts are great with great aduio and loud
God Bless sonars
