what radios have the best ears ?

soooo , the radio you like the best "hears station 40+ miles away on a quite night without any skip" . even compared to radios that herd 100+ to 160+ miles ground wave ?
 
My favorite receive from rigs that I own: President Lincoln, Magnum Omegaforce HP-45, Uniden Grant XL, and Cobra 139XLR base (in that order).

The best RX CB/freeband radios I own are the Emperor TS-5010 and Emperor Shogun.My 2510/2600/2830/Lincolns are right behind the Emperor's in RX.The AR line from Clear Channel/RF Limited have a sensitive receiver but the selectivity sucks ass.

get alot of bleed-over...i still say the best is a old d201 or Browning mk3 or mk4 and mblk would be a Tram d60 or Browning ltd...There isnt much diffrence on ssb out put pwr with 14wt or 25ssb...73 de JW

10 meters= ar 3300/3500 these have the best ears ive ever had
2/magnum radio mine are very close to my ar line
3 president 2510,lincoln ,emperior
4/rci these are good but tend to be noisy in my experience mine was NON dx version
these have been my findings over the last 19 years
 
This thread should be titled "whats your favorite radio". I'm pretty sure there's no technical data to compare CB or export radio receiver sensitivity. Be nice if there was.

Here's some numbers for you then.

I recently took my President Washington (D858 AM/SSB chassis) and put it on a properly calibrated signal generator. With a 1khz tone, I was able to dial it down to .032 uV (microvolts) which is the lowest the generator goes, and the radio was still able to pick up the tone. I haven't done this with an MB8719 chassis yet (like a Cobra 148 GTL/Uniden Grant side mic), but I don't have any reason to believe that it would be much different. I'll do that sometime this week and post the results.

This data used to be available in Popular Electronics magazine back in the late 70's and very early 80's.

Cobra 2000/148, Uniden Grant/Madison...anything built on that particular double-conversion platform got very good reviews, especially where adjacent-channel rejection was concerned.

If I was looking to duplicate the receiver performance of a Pro-40 and wanted to stick with a "legal" 40ch AM/SSB transmitter, I would get hold of a high-end general coverage receiver - one marketed to the amateur radio community, or perhaps a commercial set. Filter the rig up (emphasis on 8/6/4/2.4/1.8KHz B/W) then slave a decent SSB mobile to it via a vacuum coaxial relay.

One of my favorites for use as "twins" - Drake's R7 - used a lot of the same technology as the Pro 40. In particular, a high-level mixer (no RF amplifier ahead of it) and partial frequency synthesis. I've also used the IC-R71A in this role but its filter selection scheme isn't as flexible as the Drake's.

I've got one of these as well. I've done the diode mod and tweaked on it for a good while now. Ill have to say its right up these with the best of the uniden cobras I've had. I've talked over 100 miles with it in my car several times. I can hear stations in my car that lots of guys can't hear on their base stations and talk to them as well. Of course I have a great antenna system on my lil HHR. Puck it. LoL.
 
Booty you must sit there all day and think of these questions?
In my case its a no hands downd deal :
The Sonar FS 2340 strictly AM radio with the RCA Nuvistor that gives it a great recieve section BUT IMHO only and since thats what i use for a BASE I must dance this number when whom i brought to the dance Sonar FS 2340

I have a pair of 3500 100 watt versions that I will be sending to Bob for a complete tune up. Can't wait to try this radio out.

Well..

Although as i stated these days i use mostly Icom IC7000 (baby Pro)
admittedly is a bit of money..

looking back in earlier years..my AR3500
(100 watt version)
had Excellent ears indeed.

Would like to have compared it t my IC-7000
(that i use as a base where my AR-3500 was used as a mobile)

Of the True CB only radio i have used..
Cobra 146GTL back in early 80's
(used 1st with K40...then replaced with far better D2500 antenna that i think was the earlier version of todays mobile 1-10)

Which radio is Best though is subjective..
Depends what you want to spend in part..

Also depends on the antenna you use and area you are using it in..

Heck when i was using the 146GTL
(on a mountain top an hour from manhattan)
after about 7/8 pm i always got into canada toronto area.
in part due to the radio..the antenna and where i was talking from.
(back then there were many more people on cb )
