Jerry,
Make sure you say away from the 28.000 and up, that's in the Ham bands.
Also probably not good to go below 26.000.

That would be wise as well as being respectful to others rights.

Ok, that is what I am looking for, realistically I only need a couple over regular 40 so when we travel we can get away from all the knuckle heads ;)

The reason for this radio is it was a great deal I could not pass up, the extra's were just a bonus

Thanks
Jerry

Hey...

well enjoy the radio...
i liked when i first got a 10-11 meter radio..
they are far better then simple 11 meter radio..

now..
in answer to your question..

if you want to be 100 % legal
(on frequencys you use anyways)
then stay between 26.965 mhz up up to 27.405 mhz
(this is the 40 channels used in USA)

if you want to venture into freeband then that is basiclly
27.415 to 27.995...
however you are at that point likly to cause interference with some ham operators...

listen before talking if you are un sure..
you may at some point (as i eventually did)
deside to step up to becoming a ham operator..

i used to use my Ranger AR-3500 very well for React

any other questions..
i am sure there are many on here(besides myself and this is why this is such a good forum) willing and able to help..

One more tip--The range from 27.430 to 27.530 is an old business band, whereas from 27.540-27.990 is mostly the federal gov't, including FAA, Military, Customs, and such. (Not that any of those agencies are likely to be using/monitoring these frequencies, but that is who they are allocated to.)

I have been channel surfin for awhile now and most the the channels are pretty much dead, so I do not know what all the fuss is about with the Export's none of this does any harm to anybody? But I guess rules are rules!

The key here is when talking to say other locals, who also have an export radio. We have a group that stays on 26905.0 away from the regular 40, peace and quiet, but when skip rolls, 26915.0 is hoping, as well as other channels off the regular 40. When skip rolls sometimes just too much traffic, hechadyne,,,walking over each other on the regular 40. Give it some time, you will appreciate the choices, when the skip rolls, or you want to chat with someone locally, off the regular 40.

Off limit freqs.

I have always used the upper 40 for ssb and the lower 40 for am. Actually never go below 26.945 on am and don't use ssb any more.

about 15 up and 15 below has always been all that I've ever needed to venture out on in freeband land. Plus that's pretty much all my antenna's could handle anyway without getting a bit on the higher side of my SWR readings .....Hmmm ? guess that's why they sell antenna tuneroonies. (-:

Most of the activity I have witnessed has been from 26.735 to 26.955 AM on the low side, with 26.835 sounding like the "Super Bowl" sometimes, and 26.915 very busy when the band opens. On the side of things, 27.415 to about 27.595 or so using USB. 27.555USB being the unofficial DX calling freq. years ago there was a group of guys in Cal. that used 27.445 FM on a nightly net. The above information is for educational purposes and monitoring only. ;)

26.915-27.595 is where 99.9% of the activity is at. Anything between 25-28 shouldnt interfere with anyone. 12 meters ends at 25 and 10 meters dosent start till 28 so you wont bother any hams between 25 and 28.

Hi...

Glad to see you want to enjoy your hobby..
While also not getting others angry..

for the record..
the answer would be you can talk on 26.965 to 27.405 mhz
except that the radio you have will do a bit more then 4 watts on am and 12 watts PEP on SSB..HeHe

not to worry..
i am not here to lecture you..
just be sure if you live near any F.C.C. office that you keep power very low and within regular CB channels..

now under no circumstances (short of a true Emergency) shouldf you go to close to 28 mhz ( if i were you i would not go past 27.700 mhz) and do not go below 26 Mhz

Other then that..
Enjoy the radio Hobby...
Lots of good people in our hobby..

at some point you likly will want to step up to getting your ham ticket..
Do NOT let others discourage you from that..if you want to go that way..

i remember my AR-3500 and RCI-2970 days..
those radios worked great for me at the time..
even got me out of a couple of speeding tickets..
also enabled me to help out in REACT Agency..

eventually i grew tired of those radios...
for they are spash boxes..they do get out fairly wel though..
