Clarifier Question

The Galaxy 2100 I used to own back in the eighties spoiled me. I think that the clarifier on it would slide 5 or more either way. It was to me the ultimate radio at the time. My 959 was an attempt to relive the former glory of the 2100.

I am not, and have never been a Frequency Cop, I think it is so stupid to hear guys working SSB that go on and on about:
Hey your off frequency 3 Khz....No You are too high.....Naw both of you guys are 2 Khz low.... Well I am not moving MY frequency because you guys are off...total bullshit.

As Bob 85 already said, No one single CB is Nuts on under every condition.

Even Yaesu that uses Temp compensated VFO`s state in the Manual that frequency stability is after a warm up period.

Whatever frequency I am transmitting on is MY frequency. If I chose to operate on 14.217.123 (or in the case of 11m something like 27.513.250) and someone calls me off frequency it is HIM that is off frequency for not tuning to my exact freq. Not me. Had a fellow on 20m tell me one time I was off freq. I asked him what his readout said. He said 14.227.5. I told him that was what mine said as well. The idiot couldn't figure out why I was not on 14.225 or 14.230 instead. I told him because this was the 20m band and not the 11m band. He never came back to me after that. :D

Licensing and enforcement. But if everyone on 11 meters went by the book then I might of never heard of John Denver,MMM, and others. The Super Bowl on 6 would be a dust bowl. A even playing field is what I'm thinking of. I think our government has bigger fish to fry in going after domestic terrorists than some local yokel splattering twenty states.

I love it when John Denver or Motor Mouth Maul keys up. Makes my day.

yes i unlocked my first 2950 before it went on air, i would not own a radio with a locked clarifier.

I see. With the cursor dot feature that lets you move the last digit up/down and processor stability in RCI 50/70 radio's it's a COMPLETE WASTE. I would have thought a 30 year SSB guy would have known that. Oh well, to each is own I guess.

So you prefer to tune in 1KHz steps. Stop. Push a button to select 100 hz steps. Tune some more and never quite get it perfect due to the steps. Then push a button again later to select a larger tuning step and continue tuning up the band. I prefer to tune in 1 KHz steps and then turn a knob to get it perfect. Done. To each his own I guess.

2950's move in 100hz increments, the none dx 2950's i have tested do have decent stability for a cb once warmed up,

what kind of counter and what kind of frequency standard are you using to determine that rangers are stable?

I use the winter weather standard. Turn the radio on in the car when it's 18 degrees out, key the mic and it's darn close. let it warm up for 10 minutes and your golden. During the summer months you can turn it on and be done.

If you were to try that same test with say a Galaxy 99 you would chase the clarifier around for at least 30 minutes. And it would still drift like a sailboat.

Some radio's need the clarifier unlocked and some are great as is. All depends on what ya want.

Galaxy's drift unlocked or not. Period. The entire question of locked or open boils down to operational and is not really a technical issue. Is there a NEED? NO. Does it make things simpler? Sure does especially when mobile. Unlocking a clarifier is never a waste as suggested above. A waste of what? Time? Money? Effort? All minimal and easy to do yourself. I find that more technically adept operators than not opt for unlocked. All those years of experiance from way back before the laws mandated locked clarifiers showed them (us) what we are missing with them locked.

BTW didn't someone mention that tbis thread would soon see it's share of comments about this? :D

I think it will always be an issue as long as there are people new to the radio scene and there will be those who will steer them in the right direction. As for me,I use my 959 exclusively for am and my CRE-8900 for SSB chores.

No steering in the "right direction" required. Whatever is right for the individual is what is right. I just don't like people telling me it's a waste or there is no need or it is stupid. I operate the way I want to operate and have done so for 36 years. I see things differently than someone who has operated for a couple years.

i don't like button pushing/spanning the cursor especially when mobile, opening the clarifier makes for fast easy more accurate tuning.

I agree with bob and if you don't have at least a couple digits to the right.. ex. -
28.000xx mhz then it is hard to get that close anyways with only a display that goes 28.000x.

Agreed.

I have become very good with the controls on the Lincoln I am running Mobile so it is second nature to reach down and operate the radio while driving....not right or wrong, it is the individual's choice.
