Galaxy DX 959 opinions

Yeah, when adding a 12v fan you may have to add 3-4 1N4148 diodes in series with the "+" lead. This will drop the voltage to the fan by about a volt or so. Otherwise, that fan will be so loud as to be noticed by you and anyone you might talk to. You can attach the fan to the heat sink using drywall inserts and epoxy. That'll git er done . . .

Agreed. I like to run it around 11.6 volts. The other deal with using amplified mic's is that the left side of the radio gets pretty warm during long conversations.

43 watts? Did you do the duel final mod? If so, pm me the parts list & instructions please? I cant find much on this mod. Ive been messing with radios for decades and these 959's out perform a Grant/148/142/2000 anyday. More features, twice the power, easy to see s-meter, more mods, freq display for no road map......yup, junk huh? CB's are fun last i checked, lol.

That's whistling on it using a MFJ-971(calibrated?). I had it DTB tuned and aligned with a receive,NB mod and and I think a transistor. Just normal talking with a Road Devil mic it does around 35 watts. I had adjusted the modulation inside to peak right around 100% just normal talking through the stock Galaxy hand mic and have to keep the RD's mic volume around 1/4 but 4/4 when it showed 43 watts PEP.

Note: I need to turn the 959's modulation pot back down just a wee bit

Last night I ran the 959 with the RF Power turned back halfway. Just a few watts down PEP(not much). Not sure how this affects everything but it's got more swing according to reports.

This 148NW I have not heard much about and yes the 959DX has a few extra things that are nice one being a freq. counter but I sincerely don't think you can call a side mic 148GTL compared to a 959 or any radio that is a 40 channel SSB compared to the 148GTL and the 148GTL will be reduced to junk. And I do own both radio's and my 959DX quit putting out any receive audio after maybe an hour of use and my 148GTL is still booming in every way after 24 years since it was made.

Example) If my car broke down and it could be easily fixed, would every same model be junk?.....no. After 10 yrs being off the air, im slowely building/upgrading my gear. I went from a beginers Cobra i still had to a 959. I already owned a Saturn & Saturn Turbo, now i prefer to keep the components seperate incase PS fails or etc. Like i commented before, its just having fun guys, this is just a small hobby. I would never type here that your stuff is junk, thats just rude. Once again i will pretend that comment didnt happen, i like this forum but i got by okay before. Well, back to my "junk" lol

One mans junk is another mans treasure so who cares if anyones radio is better then my DX-959, I don't tell what radio I'm using on the air unless someone asks and all I get is good reports on how I sound, all I say is I'm using one of those drifters for a radio if they ask I tell them a Galaxy 959 and if it works it's a great radio, if it don't then it's junk.
