I still don't get it so please someone explain it to me. You spend all that money for a "export" radio and you need to spend more just to make it work right, if you can find a good tech that is. You can get an Alinco, Icom, Kenwood or Yaesu twhere the mod is usually a switch, wire cut or diode removal to make it tx all bands and they are far better radios. Most of them will cost you just a few dollars more the the coveted "exports". I just don't see the appeal for exports.

I don't want a flame war just tell me you reasons for buying an export as opposed to a say ICOM 718.
 

I live in an area close to an industrial park. I use exports on 10, 11 and 12 meters because of the noise blanker. Power line noise is correlated, so the NB's work great. None of my HF rigs can compare.

Our town has had an almost complete rebuild of our lines in the last 6 months. Thankfully, my PLN issues have disappeared.

I also enjoy operating certain exports on CW. They are small, cheap and a blast to use.

So what would be a good hf rig that can tx on 11 meters? And before anybody says it, I know it's not legal, but so are a lot of other things being done by radio users. Thanks for any and all input. I am willing to spend the coin if I can find the right rig. Again thanks for any input and god bless.
 
222 there are several but it will depend on whether you want good AM or ssb performance. Some that come to mind are:

Yaesu 757GXII - older rig
ICOM -718
Alinco SR8T
Kenwood 430s - Older rig

These are just some that come to mind but there are others. Years ago I ran an Icom 720a on 11. Worked very very well on SSB but AM performance was so so but since I was an SSB only op it wasn't an issue.
 
I'd say the main reason that exports are so popular is their AM performance. Most HF rigs do not sound very good at all on AM. You can get them to sound decent, but the type of audio they produce is not what a typical CB'er is going to say sounds great. I've said it several times before... for serious SSB work, get an HF rig. Then buy a Cobra or Galaxy for AM use.

Yep, most CB'ers are not satisfied with good audio. They want LOUD! audio. While HF rigs can sound good on AM they are not LOUD enough for most to be able to stomp on the next guy and they will not produce that silly double sideband reduced carrier AM mode often referred to as "1 watt swinging to 20 watts peak" or whatever. Myself I very much prefer double sideband FULL carrier AM mode.

I had to go and look to see what the 718 looked like and the size is way to big to fit in my mobile!

With that being said; I have no need to every buy a HF radio just to talk on 11 meters, but I have talked to many Ham operators over the years that do also use Export radio's....humm I wonder why?

All I am concerned with is; to talk to the other side of the world and a used $300, 100 watt RCI radio will do just that!

So that's my story and I am sticking to it.......;);)

Honestly I wonder why as well but for the opposite reason you do.

As I said not a flame war.. DXman your points are valid.

And so will a $400 Kenwood TS-50 and probably hear better too

Guess I need to find a good ssb rig as I have a magnum 257hp for am use. What would you recommend, I would like to be able to use it as a mobile and base as well. Thanks for any and all input.
 
Siltronix 1011D, Got to love those old tubers(y) Great SSB rig once they are aligned correctly.

Hard to beat those old Brownings for AM audio, will not see 1 watt swinging to 20, What you will see is a pile up on the meter when you key up that old bird.
