dtb radio shop sucks

I had one a guy brought to me a couple years ago and he was talking about how the radio was not getting modulation and after talking to him he was talking about the meter on the radio was not showing full modulation and was not even using an external meter to chrck modulation.

I look at it this way,,
If you know how to use your mic gain there is nothing wrong with to much modulation at wide open,,its better to have too much and not use it than not enough wishing you had a little more...

I have a Uniden 505 I bought from DTB and had him tune it. He told me it only does 90-95% modulation with stock mic. On the other hand,I use my DTB tuned 959's modulation meter to keep tabs on my modulation on account of that I use different mic's for it and I keep the peaks at 100%. 1. Road Devil 2. SRA-198 3. 636L

Took the slug out of my 29lx also, modified the ALC and cut R54. It does 40 watts. Only took a month and a half to get. It's working good, clean to most peoples ears. Good for any trucker/ slips eater. 34w on a bird pep. On the HP 54600 scope well .... The math is there. SWR is higher than my other 29's or radios. I'm guessing it was the changes in the tank circuit.

i just got a new cobra 29 lx from dtb radio shop what a joke there tune up is just to remove the slug they did not even set the mod the mod was just at 80 % WHAT A JOKE I would never let them work on any of my radios just another truck stop butcher

Is that supposed to be English you're speaking? Maybe you need to take the money you're investing in radios and use it to finish High School instead.

So it would seem. Sounds like the first guy succeeded in stirring the pot deep enough with unsubstantiated innuendos that the followers decided to hitch a ride on the band wagon. Thread is open for now but we should take bets as to when it will be closed due to getting out of hand.

Dammit C.K.!! You just make my day LMAO!! And Ill take that bet!!!
LMA:LOL:!!

Thread is still open. The OP hasn't responded to anything since making the initial claim and running.

Binrat owes me a doughnut. I like the glazed sour cream ones please.

I do happen to do research well and am logical. DTB states that any improper mod that exists on a radio that has been sent for repair, will be undone and corrected. Also stated is that if the owner intends on keeping the improper mods in the radio to -"send it to someone else!! We do NOT allow ANY radio to leave our shop in an improperly-modified condition. This policy is NOT negotiable."- Instructions for Mail-in Repairs There are 3 exceptions (11M conversion, unlocking a clarifier, and channel mods.)

Then I read tune up suggestions on his page also, under his "tips and tricks". It does state under "mosfet super-tune" to remove the slug from L14 as part of the IRF520 mosfet conversion.

I don't repair or mod radios. I don't have the skills or knowledge to do so. I have it done for me. So I can't speak to whether yours has been done correctly or not. I can't say if the removal of the slug is considered right or wrong. Before calling him a butcher, do you know what is a proper and improper mod? If you do, why aren't you tuning and doing mods on your own radios?

As far as you specifying that you only have 80% modulation, I will ask again what means you used to determine this? He uses thousands of dollars in test equipment. So it is reasonable to assume that if you used a Dosy or an equivalent, that maybe the $100 meter may not read as well as an expensive, and properly calibrated O-scope.

Improper mods that introduce audio or rf distortion. A lot of guys in my neck of the woods run awful sounding radios with the the AMC circuit disabled. That's their mindset. I applaud DTB for making this decision to make radios work right.

well it seems like 959 isnt really sure how he feels or what his experiences have been with other CB shops.

apparently he is a fan of Doug over at customcbradios.com. or at least he used to be. here is a quote from 959:

"I got my connex 33ssb from doug and a 959 and a 29 all very nice radios doug is a stand up person not to worry"

so he thinks Doug does good work here, but then goes on to say that no shop has ever done more than clip things and max other things out.
another quote from 959:

"whatis a good tune ? I never had one that was more then crank up the power and mod all the way up from any shop"

keep in mind that these two posts were only two weeks apart.

so now 959 gets a 29 done by DTB radio that has obviously not been "maxed out", and he does not like it.

ok 959, time to face the music.
you came here and started a defamatory thread about a very well known tech with a long reputation; isnt it only fair to come back to the thread you started and explain yourself?

how many watts is the radio doing?
what did you use to measure the modulation?
which slug was removed?
would you know a proper alignment if you saw one?

Sucks is a strong word if you can prove it. My biggest problem was very poor packing, minor scratches on a new radio, and the stories I got every time a promised shipped date passed.
I used Dave, ( who seems to be a nice guy on the phone) by member recommendations here. I didn't know squat then and just a little more now. One thing I've read everywhere was not to remove slugs.
Just what is the difference in removing L14 and just backing it out for more power. Whether its peak power or just backed out till its clean. Pretty much from what I have seen on the 29's is it's maxed with the slug flush or one thread showing.
I also was under the impression from reading here that cutting the protection resistor R54 I believe wasn't good either.
I highly doubt the radio was at 80% and clean sine wave, no one would hear you beyond a mile or two

thats the reason i asked 959 if he would clarify what exactly was changed in his radio.

people get confused when they see a cut resistor, and assume its for the modulation.
in this case it is not.

R54 is part of the antenna warning circuit, and when 29LTD's are tuned up, it can cause the AWI light to come on during TX even though your SWR is just fine.
removing R54 probably changes the parameters of the circuit enough so that the light wont come on until a real high SWR situation is encountered.

to be sure, removing this resistor has no effect on any other part of the radio's circuitry but the SWR alarm circuit.

also, when it comes to the "removed slug" thing, people may not know that L15, the coil by the driver, does not come with a slug in it. (anyone who has ever tried to put one in quickly realized that it wont increase power)

L14, the one by the final does, and should have a slug in it as far as i know.
its job is to provide an impedance match from the final transistor to the half wave filter immediately following it.
because of variances in part values, it needs to be adjustable because every radio will require a slightly different "right" value.

The only time I remove the slug in L14 on a 29 is if it tunes to peak with the slug backed all the way out,,other than that leave it alone,,you can watch your meter while injecting a 1khz tone into the mic,,when you turn the slug out if the average power does not dip back below peak after the slug is out your good to go,,Ive only seen this on a couple 29's(newer lxle models),,most need to be tuned leaving the slug in just below the top of the coil.

If doing a high power mosfet mod,,you can get a little more control on your gate bias voltage if you take a wrap off L14,,the fet will run cooler and the output will be better..you need to experiment.
