hi all

just got a 79-290 without the mic which i think had a channel change? so says the p.o but im not sure as its just a 4 pin?
what other mic would be a great value new choice? or just a good used choice?i would like to have the mic ch change if possible
and what other 4 pin rig mic would work?

I just looked at the service manual and could not find any info of it having channels up and down on the mic.. here is the mic wiring for it off the service manual
1- audio
2- sheild
3 NC
4 -tx
astatic mic wiring
1- SH & BLUE
2-WHITE
3-RED
4-BL

THERE IS 2 VERSIONS OF THIS RADIO. VERSION 1.1 USES THE SAME MIC PINOUT AS A COBRA AND GALAXY MIC. SOME INFO I FOUND SAYS IT WILL HAVE THE 1.1 AT THE END OF THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE TAG ON THE BACK

thanks gratefull for the help!
are you familiar with this radio? i have a couple other niggles i need advice about

these radios are very rare in my area. in the past 15 years I have seen maybe 2 of them. post what you have and someone may be familiar with the questions you have.

I have 2 of these. The 1st version & the 2nd version. Neither have channel capabilities with the microphone. There was a European model that had that function but never heard of any being stateside. If ya got more questions,I'll try to answer em best I can.

issues

thanks guys
well i can address the mic later hopefully others can find these posts

yes not many around ok Slim well i got this radio barely used in box from original owner but the display mostly when in frequency mode doesnt disply the digits properly. i dont ,,think,, its the faceplate connections but it could be. i havent tried doing the short to re boot and i havent tried cleaning any connections. but when i run my finger across the screen the digits all disapear and come back ect so its like somethings loose
or bad connection maybe and sometimes they flicker
it mostly seems to be on the mic side of the screen. is there bulbs that could be the problem?

ive done some googling and looked on you tube and im still not really clear how to fix this.

really looking forward to using this set as i cant find any other mobiles with wx and ssb and it has some great features.
if you have any other tips i would be gratefull

These def need a good power mic especially if the mic gain curcuit hasn't been modded. Actually a good power mic helps after the mod too but you can easily overmod then!! I'm not sure about the LCD screen display problem tho. Could be a light bulb, could be in the LCD display itself. Kinda hard to say really. I'd say power it up & leave it on for several days to see if that helps the display issue? Just a thought! The display does get funky or dissappear somewhat when you run fingers across it or put pressure on it at any place. It's the nature of active liquid crystal displays especially when there is NOT a hard plastic lens/cover over it. If ya can, post a pic of the display, turned on of course. Maybe we can tell better if it's a bulb or not. Sorry not much help.

Sonoma is correct, partly. The version 1.1 is actually right after the model number on the serial number plate on the rear of the radio. @ least this is the way my 1.1 version is. My 1st gen or 1.0 version only has the model number but isn't followed by any other numbers!! He is also correct on the mic wiring. My 1st (1.0 version) one is wired like the standard midland radios/mics,but for some odd reason they changed to to the cobra wiring after the 1.1 version?!! Made it much nicer tho. Hope this helps somewhat sir?!
