Opinions Wanted on Road Devil Mic

Ok here's the deal. Repaired many of them, tested many of them with radios for customers on the bench, wired them to radios etc. So I am familiar with this mic. (Astatic Road Devil).

However, what interests me, is that most of the mics out there are of the dynamic type. Believe it or not most of the CB and amateur dynamic mics lack in frequency response. It's the nature of the beast. Except for some Heil dynamic elements that I have ran in the past either in a genuine Heil mic or just swapping out the elements in a handheld mic most lack richness and lower tones.

I never cared for Astatic D-104 style power mics. For me, and my voice as well as preference, they always sounded tinny and didn't pick up bass very much, or rolled it off way too soon.

Once again, I could go with a Heil for mobile SSB and even AM operation but to shell out the money on one that I would want can get expensive, plus the ones I have had pick up background noise.

What interests me about the Road Devil, is its advertised frequency response on the back of the package and the fact that it would make sense since it uses an electret mic element in it. I could always build one and get the bias for the element from the radio, but I like the fact that it's all ready to go in one package, and adjustable output.

I have also tried them on the bench and do notice they have better bass response than even the RK-56 mics.

BUT-- how well do they hold up? I have read mixed reviews as far as quality and durability.

I also would like to see if I could dig up a schematic for the mic amplifier as well. It could be tailored in frequency response by changing some capacitors more than likely, or changing the electret element maybe to a better one (for only a couple dollars).

I have already broad banded (NOT HIFI--- just widened up) the mic audio chain in my rig for SSB, AM and FM, as well as some RX improvements and and aftermarket IF filter for my 2950DX so it would be cool to see if it would play nice.

My only other gripe is the bright, god-awful red casing on them, and the guy on the sticker that looks like he wants to devour my soul. Kinda tacky.

I read your post and if I am reading it right you are wanting to know how durable these mics are.

I have owned one for prolly 10 years, although mine is the black model which I heard makes no difference, mine has held up quite well over the years. Nice mic and has served me well.

The newer ones with the red shell have been a little flaky, most of the issues center around the PTT switch. The older black ones like the one RT2020 has didn't seem to have that problem. I've had a few cross my bench with PTT switch issues, but outside of that, the mic and amplifier components seem to be just fine. Personally, I wouldn't own one, but totally my opinion. :)

If you want something to play around with as far as audio tone, try an Astatic 575M6 hand mic, has adjustable volume AND tone.

~Cheers~

I used to have a 575M6 back in the day, but I thought they were discontinued. Buying a used mic just doesn't appeal to me. Is there a source for them?

Unfortunately, you are correct, they haven't been produced in some time. Occasionally, you'll see one on Evilbay, but they go for a mint, anywhere from 125-225 if it's NIB/NOS.

No sources that I know of to get one at this time, perhaps another member might have some input.

~Cheers~

IMO...The Road Devil is a POS...

Do this...Take one and with your Talk Back ON, squeeze around on the Mic...You will hear a crunching sound on your talk back from the flimsy plastic case of the Mic...

For about the same price as the Road Devil, you can get the RF Limited Xtreme 2018 which has a NC switch on it, plus the echo feature and a much better built case that won't make a sound if you squeeze it too hard...

IMO...the RF Limited 2018 is about as good as they come, compared to the rest of what is available in a hand held mic right now.

If you try real hard, you can get one that's free of tobacco spit and chicken grease.

Back several years ago a local old timer keyed up and said he had one for $30, so I drove down and bought it from him. The locals claimed it was the best sounding mic I had, but I just couldn't get over the crud and I ribbed him about the tobacco juice. I finally took a 636 case and cut slots in it for the tone/volume.

Sold a many of the Road Devil microphones when I was helping a friend of mine at his CB shop. There ok if your running a hot cobra 29 with the modulation swing kits and echo or one of the hot export trucker radios. The newer ones they are putting out these days don't impress me any, I like the older stuff. Even the astatic M6's are poorly built these days. It's bad when a customer purchases a new radio in the box and before we can give the radio to them it has to be put on the sig gen because of the lack of quality control anymore. If you can find a nice older RK56 that would be worth a shot.

You have to take Road Devil etiquette class 101.
1. Hold your PTT steady and don't rattle it around.
2. Keep the contacts cleaned and lubed once a month with Rat Shack cleaner and lubricant.
3. Go buy you a 2018 Xtreme.
