If today was your last day on Earth....

If you knew today was your last day on planet Earth what would you do assuming you were in perfect health? I mean if you knew you would die tomorrow what would you do in the last days? Would you spend it traveling to see the wonders of the world? Would you get hammered and forget all your worries? Would you spend it with friends and family whom you will be leaving behind? I ask this because we never really know when that day will come. We dismiss it as being far down the road but what if it was not. I ask this because at the age of 50 I have entered a turning point where the odds are beginning to add up against me. This was reinforced yesterday morning while I was at work taking my 6:00am break in the shop. The phone rang and it was a machine operator that had worked the previous dayshift. John was calling me to let me, and other's, know that a maintenance man that we all worked with had died the previous evening. Sam had worked the dayshift Friday and went home at 7:00pm. He had a shower and went downstairs to watch a movie. His wife said she would join him in a few minutes. About 10-15 minutes later she found him dead on the couch. He was 52. Although in great health there was a history of heart problems in his family. No cause of death has been determined yet however. We were all absolutely stunned at work.

This has given me time to think over the last 24 hours that were are only here on borrowed time and maybe it's time to start living today like it is our last. It could very well be. RIP Sam.

I guess what I was really thinking about was all the stuff we put off. Stuff we say we will always do and just never seem to get around to it. Taking the wife to that place she always wanted to go too, volunteering to help with your son's football team, or making that special purchase of something you had always dreamed of owning. We can always find an almost limitless number of reasons NOT to do something,that is easy. Perhaps we should look a little harder at doing what we had always wanted to do but just kept putting it off because there is plenty of time to less meaningful things first.Sometimes money is the issue but often the only thing standing between us and something we dreamed about is us ourselves.

I even myself confused. In the original post I stated if you knew it would be your last day but somewhere along the line my mind drifted towards NOT KNOWING and simply thought about what you would be missing out on by not doing something today instead of leaving it for tomorrow which may never come. THAT was my original thinking but somehow talking to family here while typing the original post it came out differently. It should have been more a "think about what you would be missing out on if" scenario rather than a "what would you do in advance scenario". Excuse the confusion.
