FT270R ordered: Any thoughts?

I'm enjoying my baofeng at the moment but I really wanted this for the ipx7 rating. We have frequent typhoons during the wet season and our amateur club often asks for volunteers to monitor water levels on the major rivers and flood prone areas. I had to keep my baofeng in two ziploc bags for our last few volunteer efforts.

You should be happy with that HT....I have the FT 60 duel bander myself,if the 270 is as good as the FT 60 you will love it

My FT 60 lives a hard life,it gets thrown in the car for a few days at a time, and is on my nail bags when I am working from time to time and it is holding up just fine so far

Enjoy the 270 !!

HI......The 270 is an excellent radio, I have 5 of them that I rotate in use whilst activating summits over here for 'SOTA'.

They're very tough radios, near bullet proof front ends and they have superb battery life.

Front end rejection is a very important consideration when activating up in the mountains, as there is a lot of 'pager' and data burst activity up there which can render some radios totally useless.

Two tips for you......

1.....As Milkman says, use an external mic....I use the MH 57, it's not waterproof, so doesn't have the membrane protection, but it will improve the audio output from the radio no end......I often get very positive comments on the loudness and quality of the audio out.

2.....I've tried using 'fast' chargers on these radios, they seem to kill the batteries, so wouldn't recommend them.

Since I started using the 270's for SOTA, many more portable operators have bought them and they're now quite common out and about on the hills.

Before I got my first 270, I used the FT 60....for me, it wasn't a 'keeper'!

Regards, Neil.

About 6 hours, and the charger doesn't tell you when they are charged which is a bit of a pain.

I usually check the voltage on the display after they've been charging for the 6 hours, if it says 8.2/8.3 volts, then they're good to go.

One battery will last me the full day out on the mountains....Usually take about 60 contacts across a few summits, which may not seem many, but I'm not a '5 x 9' type operator!....Most of the folk I speak to are regular 'chasers' so I tend to waffle on a bit.

The battery life on the 270 is impressive, the radio just seems to 'sip' at it!

Thanks for the reply. I use the power saver function set at 2 seconds and my batteries do last long enough for my needs. I just need to get an extra batt or two and that slow charger. :)
