Any Computer Savvy Members?

Does she want to save her pictures and other data from the HDD? You could probably connect the hard drive on a running pc as a secondary and copy to a DVD or USB drive

She already backed up her files before she gave it to me.

Well the hard drive now is a hitachi hds721075cla332

3.5" SATA-300

You can find the hitachi hds721075cla332 on google shopping search for $55 and up but it was me I would get a larger drive

I don't think much of hitachi....failing and the pc is still fairly new.

Hitachi makes xlnt drives. You do not have to replace brand for brand. As M42 said, just get a SATA II drive; they are quite common and relatively inexpensive. $40-60 for a 500gb-1tb, which is enough for anyone unless you hoard movies. In fact, you can upgrade to a SSD (solid-state drive; no spinning parts to slow you down) which are blazing fast but a bit more costly. But well worth it - IMO. Will double/triple the speed of your computer. Just bought one 6 mo ago and have not regretted the 3X price whatsoever.

For God sake reload it with something other than Windows. Put Linux on it and it will run faster, less susceptible to viruses and you will be more happy, have better sex life and riches will come your way.... ok maybe I over did it but seriously consider something other than Windows from Micro$oft.

Twenty five years of supporting M$ products has left me very weary and tired of their bull crap. There are better alternatives out. Look at Linux Mint or Ubuntu or if you really want something that "looks" like WinDOZE then look at Zorin Zorin OS - Home

Replace everything in the box and eventually you will fix the problem. Now that we have identified the correct drive that is causing the errors you can narrow your focus.

One last thing you can try before spending any money is to format the drive and reinstall the OS with your recovery disks.

Respectfully, he doesn't need an operating system.
He does need a hard drive.

Linux just doesn't have the programs that he was probably running and still needs.
Maybe maybe not, up to him to decide that. I have not found anything that I used on a daily basis when I used WinDOZE that I cant get on Linux. I can also get just about any WinDOZE app to run under Linux as well Via wine or VM.

I have serviced more machines with hard drive failures with "Hitachi" Hard Drives and have even bought brand new ones that failed in a year to a year and a half!! I will not ever purchase another one but thats based on my experience with them, I now use / order the higher end Seagate or Western Digital Drives.

If a person wants "Hitachi" then thats what Ill order for them because I dont keep them on hand. Its crazy because Hitachi was the most used Drive in most new machines throughout the 1990's. If it were me I would replace with a Seagate drive which is what I most of the time keep on hand for replacements tyey usually have a good warranty on their Hard Drives.

The utility is still running..its almost....will be interesting to see if it finishes or crashes?
