I was looking at new and different antenna mounts for my mobile when I stumbled across this monstrosity:

New 4 Magnet Super Mag Antenna Heavy Duty Quad Mount for CB Ham Radio Antennas | eBay

Looks like you'd need two people to effectively R&R this beast! Probably could get away with only two magnets, but four?? Are you driving around with an A-99 base station antenna? LoL

It gives me a Polar Vortex wintertime cabin fever project idea similar to this, only with two 5" magnets underneath a 102" whip

I bought a small box of stuff one time with a cobra 2000 d104 desk mic realistic desk mic and a speaker.and a mobile antenna. $150 cdn :p.not bad if ya ask me. I was surprised at the antenna that was in this.

One magnet. Same size as those in the picture. And a 7 ft firestick trucker style antenna. Im like wth who would drive around with that. Still not sure to this day. I however used it as a base antenna on the roof of my apt. Surprisingly it did pretty good. Even broke skip on the superbowl ch 6 with no power straight stock.

To this day I wonder who would need one that big with a single antenna let alone 4 magnets.

It seems you would do a lot of paint damage to the roof yanking that thing off and putting it back on. If someone needs a magnet mount that large, drill a hole.

Wouldnt having more magnet surface area improve the RF ground coupling to the sheet metel? I figured it would, but I dont know. This might be worth researching.

I'm curious , yes why not ? It has more metal so it should increase the ground plane effect , even if by a small amount .

why take it off at all? with the right antenna this thing will shear through tree branches and low overpasses.

it's been a while, but I do recall being impressed when i took mine down after a year and a half. there was significantly less discoloration than I'd come to expect from a wilson 500 running the same output.
It may not supply a better ground plane, but it does distribute the flow somewhat.

I will concede that you might get an ever so slight increase in so called ground-plane but not worth the effort. There many variables in this as well, how its constructed, thickness of the metal, position on the vehicle and so on.
