I am going to be taking my test in a month or so and I was looking at a few Baofeng radios to play with when I go get it..
To me they all have the same guts inside with just a different case. So is there any one you would pic from if the 3 Baofeng GT-3, UV5R, or UV82 will one out perform another or is it just what look do you like?

Either the UV82 or one you didn't mention the UV-B5. Both have solid rx and good tx properties. I like the B5 better because on the encoder knob on top, no push button freq changing. The GT-3 is just a fancy higher priced 5R so I would eliminate that one right away. The 5R is still a good purchase based on its current price only. As I said above the best options are 82 or the b5. I would take the B5 over the 82 but that's a personal opinion.

Only thing with the 82 is the dual PTT key!! Depress the top of it for the upper freq on display, then depress the lower part for the lower freq display! Also the 82 is a bit bigger than the B5. I have the B5 and really like it for the size and the encoder knob. Great lil HT and battery life is great!!
Slim

And you know it will do 220 right? Look it up.

As a newb, what is it with the 220 range that makes it important? (I do understand the idea in band access Vs. Radio) but what is that band range used for and the inability of the Baofungs to use it a stopping point?

What the deal is with the mod you now have a tri-band radio instead of dual band one. As for 220 yes there is nothing special about it other than there are few radios made today for it.

The gt3 does have a couple hardware updates..it's not just a 5 with a different case..and it doesn't overload in crowed places like the 5 and supposed to have a better amplifier in it .but I own both and the receiver is better imho

Ok so now it transmit on 220..what are you doing for harmonic suppression? You wouldn't be transmitting without any kind of 220 filtering would you ? There aren't any built in and at its designed frequency it just meets fcc regulations. .I can't see them going through the Hassel of suppressing a band it wasn't built to use .

They do offer a dual band 144/220 ht as well ..it's a whopping 50$ "amazon" and has enough filtering to keep inside fcc regulations. ..let's teach our new hams correctly.
