How are the GPS capabilities with ID-51A and FT1DR

So I am trying to determine how well the GPS function works on these units. Do they work similar to a Garmin back tracking way points allowing data export. Most important to me would be real time longitude and latitude. I can physically right them down into a journal. If you guys have had experience using your HT's in this fashion I would love to hear about it.

I can only speak for the ID-51A. The GPS capabilities are pretty basic, it does give you your position in latitude and longitude. It also gives your altitude (MSL), velocity and direction of travel (the direction of travel is an arrow on a compass face). You can store a position with a name tag, then if you want to return to the spot, it will show the distance and point in the direction you need to go using the same compass face mentioned above.

It does have a GPS position logger (I haven't used this feature), but it does allow you to set the record interval (1 - 60 seconds). There is also an Alarm function if you move too far from the set point (I haven't used this either).

Thanks for the info!
I just purchased a Garmin eTrex 20 so I can log points while I am out surveying wetlands etc. My honest opinion of these is that they are ridiculously antiquated. The screen is something from a 1990's cell phone and it responds like one as well. It comes with only a base map which shows only main highways. Ultimately its a $180 plastic box that displays longitude and latitude. Also, if you want a topo map of your area its an additional $99 to get the 24k version and more cash for the satellite imagery to go along with it. (sorry for that little rant I just hate it when companies WAY over charge for things).

Anyway, I only really need the longitude and latitudes. If the HT can get me back to the same location that's perfect. I can always upload them later onto a map. Since I am in the market for a HT I might as well take the Garmin back and get the HT.

I should have also pointed out that if you save points into the ID-51, they are recorded on a Micro SD card, which can be removed from the radio and viewed and exported on a computer. Doing this, you may not even need the log book (at least out in the field).

Hi!
I've got the Yaesu FT-1D and had the ID-51 before. The GPS capabilities are quite the same, like logging, Coordinates, send data to external devices etc. The menu handling is slightly better on the ID-51.

If you like to have APRS, go with the FT-1D it is a great APRS handheld and analog handheld. The Yaesu Digital Systems seems to be interesting too, but I do not have an OM here to test it.

If you need/want to have DStar the ID-51 is a very fine handheld also for analog but without APRS and Scanner capabilities you have with the FT-1D

Thanks Uli! I was a little concerned about that Yaesu based on the somewhat negative reviews and lack of them... Although its about twice what I wanted to spend on a HT I went ahead and ordered the Icom. If I didn't need/want the gps and its ability to store points to the card I was just going to get a pair of FT60R's and call it a day.... I hope I made the right decision.
