73's or just 73?

It is that simple. They just like taking stabs at this is all.

Personally, if Hiram Maxim made that first "73's"; then it was settled right then and there.. . .

Wait...did Hiram say 73's or 73?

At the end of the day no one can say that Amateur Radio lets tradition stand in the way of progress and that's what I like most about the hobby. That being said it is our duty as good operators to make sure the traditions that do follow the hobby remain in tact. I wouldn't correct anyone on the air using 73's or SWR's but I might in person or on the forum if they really didn't know the correct usage or origin. That's not passing judgement...that's Elmering.

I suppose CW is the place where most traditions and operating protocols are still alive and being practiced. So, is it still "hi hi" or are we doing "LOL" now?

Lol.
I have ended many voice conversations on HF with " 73 for now my friends "
Or just Seventy Three.
Never really thought it was much of a big deal.

I have never had anyone give me any grief over it.

73
Jeff

World Wide Three Hundred N ThirtyNine, and I am off the Key.

I was told it came from the railroad days with Morse code. The operators ended with 73 in reference to the Winchester 1873. They actually just started making that rifle again in 2003. BTW, I say 73, but I don't correct anyone else.

Think its bad with 73 or 73's back in the day it was 51 55 73 and 88, The first two seem to have been lost over the decade or so I was off radio between 89 and 2000, when I came back I couldn't believe how bad things on 11m had got,

people calling QRZ dx instead of CQ or CQDX, wtf is that about, some sort of preconceived paranoia? Nobodys calling you ya nugget your calling out for a general contact, then all the crappy activations and contests, more shit fae the ham bands thanks to Alpha Tango (Amateur Transmitters),

555 the new call channel, wtf happened to 27.455 always was int call frequency along with 26.285, then you've got the 5 by 9 OM brigade, what's up with an honest signal check? You give me S1 R2 that's exactly the report you'll get, fucking deal with it or buy a better set up.

As for Class C splatter boxes, In my opinion no room for them anymore on 11m same as any ham band, they are filthy, inconsiderate and fucking awful to listen too on SSB, no room for shitty power mikes, echo or noise toys either, you want to do anything to increase you chances in poor conditions, buy a speech processor, preferably an RF one, it will compromise your audio quality, but will be much cleaner than overmodulation as most designs have filtering fitted following it before feeding it back to audio chain, and might get you through with a bit more punch on poor days, I wouldn't recommend one all the time though.

As for smoking in a non smokers house, I always ask, and respect their answer, I'm quite happy to puff a joint outside but be it a house or a vehicle that people have paid out money to decorate/upkeep/buy then the very least they deserve is to be asked and respected, When in Rome.

Just for the novelty thought I'd link too the history of Philips Codes of which 73 and 88 (was originally 22) are both part of, 51 and 55 I'm not sure how they came about but were definately used a lot in eay 80's.
On the Origin of "73"

Not going to get into the Ham v CB argument except to say from my recent experience (ie last 13 year) both have about equal percentage of bad to downright awful operators, back in the 80's both had a far higher percentage of good operators, more a reflection of a changing world than either hobby, Ignorance and self interest seem to be more the norm these days than the socialist past of the early 80's.

If I can, I am happy to help either ham or cb'er, makes no difference to me whether your 100% legal or 0% legal, as long as your interesting I'll talk to you, I don't recognise any laws anyway that are made by the rich to suppress the poor.

If you want to be 100% Legit I'll show you how to get the best out of it, I ain't going to talk you into my perception of law, that's your choice, all I will do is help you achieve the best you can whatever you choose, and I will point out all the drawbacks of illegal operations and consequences. I don't believe in teaching people illegal stuff without pointing out the consequencies if caughtn that way they can weigh it up fairly.

All I ask in return is don't constantly bombard me with be a ham, I don't want to be a ham, I'd like to see 100w AM/FM/SSB on 11m 26-28Mhz which would most likely cure the problem of poor quality illegal radios and burners (ain't calling them linears as most are far from linear). If you can't do it on 100w SSB you probably won't do it at all, so there's really no need for more power than that, I have no interest in Amateur radio, only 11m ssb, legal or not,tbh I can't be arsed with all the dumb ass laws and regulations on ham radio, nor the grass your fellow ham mentality a few operators have,Give me the laid back approach of 11m anyday, where I can laugh if I want and not have to sound like a mong saying Hi Hi, wtf is that about? If I want to tell someone that someone else said Hi, I will, another stupid law on amateur radio with no logical point to it.

I respect good ham operators the same as good 11m operators, especially the hundreds I've spoke too on 11m who never forgot their roots and the ones who are quite happy to come on the CB section and share their knowledge, Respect is earned, its not an automatic right just because you've got a bit of paper saying you passed a test, ( I ain't getting involved in the quality of past and present tests either). Suffice to say both could be circumnavigated by anyone desperate enough, I know for a fact many have, I have seen it with my own eyes. Here in the UK its only recently photo ID was required, anyone could have sat the test for you and even with photo ID I know its still be beaten. I'm sure it is just as possible in other country's.

If you want my respect, give good, consistent advice and make it clear whether its opinion or fact, I don't give a fuck what band you use, what radio you use, whether your legal or not, as long as your willing to share good advice I will like you. Its that simple, 73 Jazz :)
