Anyone here used the Astatic 575-m6 michrophone on the Magnum s9 ? appreciate the s9 has great strong audio even using the standard michrophone but just wonder what they are like when used with the above version ?

any ideas on wiring ?

lastly- is it better to turn the mic gain down on the actual radio and adjust via the michrophone itself or mic gain fully up on the radio and again adjust on mic - bit confused ??!!

The main benefit would be the tone control on the mic. Like you said a Magnum S9 already has a boat load of audio. You will have to fiddle with both the mic gain on the radio & the mic to find that "sweet spot". You won't want to run either cranked wide open unless you like sounding like crap. Something like 2/3 on the radio and a 1/4 on the mic will be plenty. You might also have to leave the Top Gun feature off. Once dialed in it will sound great.

i ran my magnum s45 hp with mic gain @ 12 o clock and 575 mic at 3/4 way up the dial.
all this with top gun off. ive found top gun only sounds great with a rk56 or 636
hope this helps

Okay thanks guys appreciate the comments, anyone else ran such a combination off radio / michrophone ?

Running a power mic into a radio that has the mic gain turned way back is defeating the purpose.
If the S-9 needs an amplified mic, something is wrong.
The S-9 is one of the VERY FEW export radios I would own.

So running the mic because of the better element and the ability to adjust the tonal responce is not a valid reason? I agree that you would need to watch the output because of over modulation problems. My 101 does not need a power mic at all but I run an 1104c because it makes the audio sound better then any stock mic could. As I have said on here before, I live and die by the ALC meter not some crappy modulation thing.

The old 575-M6 was probably one of the best hand held mics ever made. The one with the white colored board and large key switch. Once they changed that board to the green one and those two guys signed their name on the board, the quality took a nose dive. The inside screams of Chinese "quality" now. I heard they took the case to some aerodynamic lab for testing and balancing to insure it lands directly on the 1/2 cent switch any time it's dropped. It lands on the switch more consistently than a cat lands on its feet. Having said that, it still has great audio quality.

the magnums dont NEED a power mic . kinda why i gotta run mic gain back
the magnums seem to like the stock mic the best as far as which has the most punch
[havent figured that one out ]but the 575 gives ya ability to change the tone

I disagree that you need to run your mic gain back because you run a power mic, I'm thinking it has more to do with the mic running at 75%.
why blast into the radio and use the radio to reduce when you can just run a lower signal into the radio in the first place?

Man this isn't rocket science, run the audio output on the mic lower to limit background noise and adjust the radio output via the mic gain.

this IS what i did . however my audio reports were very low with gain on mic
ran way down. and for some reason with mic gain on radio wide open it picked up
the fan in my power supply and tv. guess this is why my magnum is on the shelf .lol
never could get the audio just right unless i use the stock mic

I run the D104M6B on my Magnum S45HP simply because I somehow managed to goof up the stock input socket, and it doesn't work anymore. I use a combination of two things to set the mic. First, I listen through the talkback with a set of headphones/earbuds. Then on SSB, when I key the mic while driving down the road, I watch for output on my outboard power meter. If it is showing power, I turn the gain down until it doesn't. Listening through the earbuds allows me to hear my transmission, and making sure I have eliminated all the background noise. Gain through the rig is plenty, and power output is just fine.
