What are some good new radios on the market that are great on am, but also have ssb? I have only used AM and their are a bunch of people in my area that use AM. So I have to have a great AM radio. I am kinda interested in ssb though. Some radios that I am considering...

Magnum 257hp
Yeticom optima
CRE 8900
Galaxy 979
Maybe a Stryker???

What do ya'll think? Any clearly better radio in the list?

Get the optima mk3, best bang for the buck of all the radios you have listed IMO.
The magnum 257hp is no longer in production, and there have been some recent issues that I have read about with the stryker radios, the optima MK3, is a rock solid radio that is well built, not a 100 watt radio but does do 40 watts am and 50-60 watts ssb, and like I said, haven't read many if any at all anything giving the optima mk3 a bad review. JMO, save sone money and buy the optima, you will be happy you did, and there is no Peak and tune required, they come set up out do the box pretty good, if anything maybe Turn up AM modulation pot a bit. Other than that the 11m mod is very simple. Do some research before you buy, because for about 200 more (500 total) you can get the alinco sr8t. This is a true HF radio that does 100 watts on full power. This is the other radio I would recommend looking at. Again JMO. But for a good 10-12 meter radio the optima mk3 is hard to beat for the money as they are under 300 now around 275 new.

Hey I misinformed you, copper electronics has the magnum 257hp, these are new models and are the last production run of them per the web site (copper electronics). Just ordered myself another one. I do like my current 257hp a lot, has done well for me for a year now in a harsh mobile environment. Good radio IMO as well, cost is 277 shipped and that is an 80 watt radio, mine has been top notch and stable as a rock on ssb and has great am and ssb audio. Either the optima mk3 or the magnum 257hp would work well. JMO.

either radio set at 100% modulation is 100 % modulation
one radio cant be any louder than the other
most people take it as being louder if its got the distortion to it.
thats not loud
if you pick a radio for ssb then it should not have a echo knob
and remember just because it has a ssb knob does not mean it can function properly on ssb

I chose a 99v2. 3 year warranty in case it's a pos, plus the local dude is a ranger/galaxy man; i.e. hopefully I can get it fixed without having to ship it across the country. Good luck.

Your right 100% is 100% modulation. The quality of the audio can differ from one radio to the next.

No, the Lee kickes butt on AM. The 979 is pretty good on SSB. What do you talk and what are you looking for in a radio????

Look under export radios, GL vs 979 in the forum. I explained what I want there. Thanks for the reply here. I think I'm going with the Lee, but still don't know...
