Bought a Fatboy 1x2290/2x2879 and have it mated to a Galaxy 739. First day blew some kind of transistor and fatboy fixed for 70 bucks. It lasted another day and blew finals. Pushing it with 5 watts, 1.4 swr, 10 gauge positive and ground. Somebody tell me what is wrong, PLEASE.

I'm no expert of Fatboy amps but isn't 5 watts a little much to drive a 1 x 2 with? I mean those finals just HAVE to be screaming for help with that kind of drive level being applied unless the amp is swamped heavily and I doubt it is as that would require an extra $1.67 worth of parts.

i agree it should be a low drive amp, but just exactly how low, that information should come from the manufacture when one buys from them, if one bought from the builder

plus i would've thought the first time they repaired it for OP they would have told him something about the drive...

unless if they want him to keep coming back

You talking a 5 watt dead key or 5 watt swing.

Just to throwing this out I would be interested in buying it blown up for the right price

Before the amp blew what was the dead key wattage?
5 watts should push a 3 pill beyond the breaking point.
It's not a Fatboy failure but an operator failure as it is 99% of the time.
3 pills will last decades if they are driven to lay down a 100 watt key.....only!

Yeah he was probably dking at 300 if his radio was dking at 5. That 2290 probably needs less then a 1 watt key.

I am inclined to lay blame with the manufacturer for making a 1 x 2 in the first place. Who in hell needs that kind of drive to the finals unless he is running milliwatts into it?

Yeah.....it is operator error for not running within the limits regardless of what the manufacturer provides him with.

Kinda have to agree here. 1 driving 2 is ripping the ass out of it really. The Op should consider a straight 2.

On the other hand is it not up to the consumer to educate themselves? Imo the best teachers are mistakes.

I very much agree. Nothing worse than an operator that has no clue how to operate his gear. I especially detest people that don't even know the brand or model of the gear they have. :headbang I mean seriously....have you ever heard someone that has been asked what they are running respond with "Well I'm not sure what it is really. I just got it a week or so ago and haven't figured out all the buttons yet." I have. :censored:

Sometimes with amps it is hard to know what you have. Some "CB Shops" buy amps from builders like Fatboy Xforce Davemade ect peal the stickers off and slap on their own.

First question is what's a Galaxy 739? I don't think they even make that model number.

As already stated, you put way way too much dead key into that low drive amp and smoked it. Something like a 2 watt dead key with no more then 20 watts peak will work.

You would have been better off getting a 2 pill Fatboy and not a 1x2. Depending on what Galaxy radio you have you were probably smacking that amp with too much peak input wattage as well.

It's not what's on the outside but rather what's on the inside that matters. Do you buy a car and not know how many cylinders it has under the hood?
