First off I want to thank the members here for all of the great info on this forum. While I have done a lot of research and learned a lot, every install is different and has different requirements. I really want to do this install as perfect as possible, and would like your input.

I have a Stryker 955hpc and I am trying to decide on the details and location of a Monkey Made antenna. I want to be able to add a 1k amp in the future if I feel I want another s unit. The truck is a 2005 dodge ram. I am more than willing to mount it through the roof but the roof doesn't seem strong enough for a big antenna. I need to figure out my mount/spring combo before I order the antenna to keep it just under 13'6". Is there a roof mount that would be strong enough, or should I mount it to the headboard?

I'd do a Wilson or Sirio right behind the dome light. It's a simple install that doesn't even require headliner removal. Run the coax down the "B" pillar, under the seat and up under the console to the dash.

Hi all,

my first thought was to utilize the Headache rack and save a hole in the roof. With the tools/materials in the bed I am sure the mount will last longer than the truck. :D

After messing around with different antennas over the years, I really have no use for a wilson. They are definitely not bad, I just don't want another. As far as the sirio, I have only recently heard much about them. What sirio model would be the best?

That's a good idea but the bonding must be considered. Bonding the rack to the deck, bonding the deck to the frame.
A friend use the headache rack thing a few years ago with constant pain in the a$$ success. His was onto of the box rails type of rack. It was ok for HF but VHF sucked.
Or, go with what 359 suggests (my favourite) with Sirio or Wilson hardmounted.

Im really thinking that if I bond the bed, cab and welder, mounting to the headache rack would work as well as the roof. I could also fabricate a folding mount if I went this route.

I had a Wilson mag mount 5000 for four months. Load got full of water. Fried the load my box and radio.

Here is an example of a mount that I have used before. I used a monkey made single coil antenna the largest one they make, it was 7ft9in. Antenna and was very heavy. I had to make a backing plate for the brass mount that would spread the weight of the antenna. Here is a photo of that mount and the base is made of abs plastic. It was used on a 1989 jeep Cherokee with the single coil monkey made that was heavy as a brick!!! Never had issues with this setup though!! There are 8 holes in this plate all which used 1/4" stainless bolts and hardware. Here are a couple of photos, sorry the mount is a bit lack luster it needs to be shined, but this was one heck of a mount and worked well for me.

I believe this is an old Breedlove brass quick disconnect mount. It is heavy duty!! And is foldable as well. Bottom has a 1/4" screw and a hole in the threaded portion for your coax to go through, the coax shield went to one of the mounting bolts to the roof of the vehicle. Hope this helps. And for mounts check Breedlove mounts out. They carry a large selection of mounts and are quality mounts as well. God bless.

And as far as mag mounts go, yes the sirio performer 5000 is a better quality antenna than the wilson 5000 IMO. Used both and the performer just worked better. JMO. If you can hard mount one and you will be a lot happier in the end. No more taking the magnet off all the time to make sure no moisture has built up. Boy what a pain!! It takes some work to properly install an antenna system, but if done correctly the benefits are well worth it!! Again hope this helps and god bless.

I really don't know if this would work very well for me. I have no doubt it worked well on an old cherokee, but I guarantee that roof is thicker, and it has ridges in the roof to add rigidity. I climbed up there to mark the center of the roof, and the roof caves in extremely easily. I just used a roof mount from firestik on my 2001 ram, but this roof is way too flimsy.

Would the performer 5000 live behind a dx-1600? I would also think a high mass antenna like the Monkey Made would have better frequency coverage if someone wanted to freeband a little.

Thanks Binrat for mentionioning the need for bonding, I get ahead of myself and figure this part of the equiation has alredy been considered.

The folding mount would be a nice touch...

I'm not going into the Wilson vs Sirio debate. I've never had issues with Wilson and never used Sirio. But a center roof mount won't be outperformed by any other installation and the coax is tucked neatly out of sight with no chance of damage.

I think this may be the best solution I have seen. If I go this route, I would have to remove the headliner to change coax, and I don't want to do that if I decide to add an amp. My radio will be mounted to the roof between the sun visors, so I won't need much coax to reach it. My amp would be in the back seat somewhere, so I would like to start with coax long enough. What do I do with the excess? Just stuff it above the headliner randomly, or big coils? What is the best coax for 1k watts? Sorry for the questions, there is just so much bad info everywhere that I am hesitant to believe anything anymore.
