Good for you and good luck.
Radios, here is my thoughts, Kenwood TS 2000 (S or X), then Icom IC 7100 / 9100, then Yaseu 857D.
I have used the 857D during a few contests, fieldday ect and was not overly impressed with the small display, menus. I have played with a 2000 and the 9100 and liked the 2000 the best.
Just my 2 cents.

Flex radio is new to me

That looks really neat ,I have a spare hot rod computer , but I would need it with
11 meter also, software is hard to work around with a jumper ?

Are you looking for a rig that covers 2, 440, 6 and HF? If you are I will seriously try and talk you out of that. My reason is while the shack in a box rigs are nice if you have a problem and need to send it out for repair you are down everything. Just something to think about. Congrats on being a ham.

P.s. your a ham now why jeopardize your license by running 11 meters with it. If you still want 11 meters buy a CB.

I've owned just about all the radios mentioned so far. My next rig is definitely going to be the Yaesu FT-DX1200 or the DX3000 if I wanted to spend the money. They engineer the same receiver into the 1200 as their top end rig. After using the FT-950 I won't buy another Kenwood. Icom would be my second choice.

Pick up a seperate rig for 2m/70cm. I'm not impressed with Yaesu rigs there but Icom makes some nice uhf/vhf rigs.

Just my opinion. :)

The broken radio

All in one can be a problem ,I work on digital printers and copiers w that have fax and scan to file and when the feeder doesn't work, all there stuff get backed up And the whole office is helpless.
Good point.

Well now, that's a different story.
My thoughts, TS-480 HX and an Icom uhf/vhf. I personally don't have any use for uhf as it is not very active in my area. I don't really have too much experience with Kenwood vhf radios. I have had a few Icoms, great vhf radios. I have a close friend who has Yaseu and I find his to have a small knobs ect.

Just my $.02 here... you're a new ham why not look at some used/new HF only gear? The ICOM 718 is a great started rig as is the Alinco Sr8T. VHF only radios are a dime a dozen out there. In the long run you will much better off, take the extra cash and spend it on the most important part..... the antennas!
