XFORCE 1x4 question about turning off driver pill

Many people that realize after the fact that they should have bought the straight 4 pill have this done. How simple a job depends on your electronic skills. For me I would either hire it done or sell the amp and buy a 4 pill.

my skills are fine. more of a tube amp guy. was just wondering if anyone cared to share. i'm all about sharing in my old age..in a tube amp more times than not just run it on low or pull the driver tube(s). I guess these pill deals are different. I see amps all the time with 2x status that can either just run the driver or turn it off and just run it with external driver, i have never looked under the hood of one but thought i'd ask.. ^^ ab v c^^

All that needs to be done is disconnect the driver stage from the input of the 4 pill section. Then move the coax from the variable to the input of the 4 pill section. Its class c so the driver pill won't conduct when you key. Now think about how many poles and throws you will need on this relay. The rest is easy if you think it out.

So you would leave the driver powered after bypass?

You can disconnect the b+ if it makes you feel better. I've always done it as I posted above. If the driver was biased it might be a good idea to at least disconnect the bias supply. With out biasing the transistor will not come on until you give it some RF. Depending on how the bias circuit is wired you may be feeding the other pills too much current when you take the load from the driver pill away. The only amps I've done this to are class c Dave style amps. Your results may vary. I've never made it switchable with a relay. I agree with Crusher about more trouble than it's worth. My luck the relay would fail and smoke a pill or 2 before I realized what was going on.

Yep the prices are getting crazy on amps. Just because they discontinued the toshiba 2879, it seems like everyone jacked the price up on the whole line up, even the DEI boxes aren't cheap. What gives? You are right dx31353, building them yourself will save a bunch, but most either don't have the time or skills to do it right. I might be able to build one, but it probably would not work like it is supposed to lol. I know my position and look for the deals that pass through every so often. But now that the cat is out of the bag with the toshiba's being limited quantity, it seems that it's being exploited IMO. 500 for a 4 pill and does that include ssb biasing and delay? Or is that just class c, I looked at the DM 2 pill 400hd and with ssb and preamp it was over 400 dollars. It surely will drive CB to its grave at this rate. Time to get my ticket and stop BS'ing around I guess!

Disconnecting the driver stage is easy as said. Yes always disconnect power from driver stage when not in use. Remove the resistor from between stages. The take the coax that was soldered to pot and move it to the input of 4 pill. Make sure you solder shield to ground. Then solder center conductor to input of 4pill/ transistor stage. That's it. If its a 1x4 I doubt it has bias.

Today I can not see a reason to put a driver in front of 4 2879`s, no need for it as most radios can develop enough drive to do the job.....
Some of these guys are putting 2 drivers in front of 4 2879`s, that is just a train wreck waiting to happen, but it keeps the guys that repair solid state amps busy fixing them.
