Suggestion on 1KW 2m amplifier

Ok I see. I just assumed that was one benefit of a ham ticket, you can use much less power and work repeaters. I bet that back pack 1kw 2m amp for your hand held is a bitch. lol

i would love to get ahold of a mobile antenna first with some gain that would take a 500 watt amp on the 70cm side to run in the mobile
i take that back maybe a good 250 to 500 range

I have to ask why? You maybe able to trip a repeater with that kind of power but you may not be able to hear it if you do. as for simplex operation, same thing is local but if you are trying to work a tropo opening then horizontal is the way to go and the vertical mobile antenna would be a very poor choice for that. Beside I am not sure i would want to be that close to 500 watts at 440 MHz plus the antenna gain.

A gallon or gallon and a half is a waste for terrestrial communications on VHF, even for contesting IMHO.Not to slam CB'ers, I consider myself more of a CB'er than an amateur, but this sounds like CB mentality and though it doesn't belong on that band , lets keep it there.

I am with you on this one. 1.5kw on 2 m WHY??

As already mentioned. Tropo,Trans-equatorial propagation, EME, meteor scatter, auroral etc............ Lots of different propagation modes than local repeaters and local FM simplex comms. WHY 1.5 Kw on HF? It propagates so much better than VHF for long distance comms.

Probably the best quality amplifier on 2 meters, would be a home brew 8877. The M2 amp is a good choice if you do not want to home-brew your own. Lunar is also a great choice.

Why 1.5 KW on 2 meters? You can have a blast on SSB doing tropo, meteor scatter, etc. I need to get my antenna back up, I miss 2 meter DXing. Lots of fun, you would be surprised at what you can do with 100 watts. That in itself makes you wanting another 10-13 db of transmit signal. When your signal is at the noise floor or slightly above, 3 DB makes a difference. Not so much when you are S9.

Call antenna works in ca. Rich is a great guy will take care of you. He has a website antennaworks.com.

I had one of his amps and it worked great. Traded it to my pal who got sick of his henry. He still uses it to this day. He is a big simplex guy.
