Ameritron AL-80B

Brett,
Good Amp.. Best bang for your buck, I am running one now I keep the drive down to about 60 watts and see 5-600 out a little less on 10-12 but that's the nature of the beast.. DONT over drive it and will last you a LONG time.. If you can run on 220 GO FOR IT.

ALL the al 80 series amps did have 10M in them snip of a wire and away you went.. I have all 3 version AL80/AL80A and the AL80B.. The B model by far the best of the bunch.
Stay away from the original version to many problems with them..

Also good luck in getting your general ticket you'll love HF on the other bands..

73's Bruce

PS: watch 17M band seems to be the demise of many amps if not tuned right

Now that I think about it, the early al 80 amp I worked on originally had 10 meters but the input and output were reworked for optimal operation on 12 meters. The al-80b just had the green wire I had to snip. Which opens the short from the 10 meter input coil to ground.

My mistake

I have worked on hundreds of amps Its hard to keep track

Cool. When 10 is hoppin', 100 watts seems to be all I need. 17 looks good for me as well without the juice. It is 20 and 40 that seem to be where I need the boost, so the amp should work great for that. Just had the wiring done on Friday, along with an AIR CONDITIONER! Temps in the shack were getting up to 108 during the day. Whew! The unit is a combined ac/heater unit, so I'll be good year round. 220 or 230 whatever they rate it these days, and I have a dedicated line for the amp.

108 degrees?! OMG I would just roll over and die if it ever got that hot in the shack/house. Installed a full house HVAC heat pump unit two years ago. One of the best things I ever did. Now I can suffer from thermal shock all year around when stepping out of the house.
