Ham Shack lightning Carnage

Omg i fear that every time... any time i here thunder i panic and unplug every thing...
My outlet is also dedcated right the the pannal running through 3' of grounded copper watter pipe hopping it will ark in to that and not damage any thing in the house..

That reminds me that I forgot to install the whole house lightning arrestor unit on my main service entrance. This past year has seen almost NO lightning which is very strange so perhaps I can do it over the winter when I get more time.

I installed one of these few years ago after losing a frig, freezer and a 35 inch TV plus about every bulb in the house...
Have had a Direct Hit on the service pole out front since and never lost even a light bulb...
Also installed a DELTA 102A(?) arrestor....glad I did!
All the Best

I like that idea Gary. this is what I have. It connects to the main service panel by way of a simple breaker 20 amp minimum. Simply take a branch circuit and feed it to this panel and ground the panel well. The design puts it across the main power buss thus protecting everything. The MOV's always fail in short mode and this causes the branch feeder breaker to trip alerting you to a failure. They were designed to protect Nautel broadcast transmitters but will in fact protect anything in the main panel.

I like that one also CK...should have something out here in the shack on the Sub-Panel feeding the shack...then tied to my ground matte for the shack....finally did tie the ground matte and the Sub-Panel back to the main panel service ground....
And about to break it back apart...Picked up Static on 20m and up now...should have not done it...
Only did it due to insurance and the "mighty NEC"....
Horse-Hocking Bull having to due that!....Now my noise floor up 5-10 dB...
All the Best

Pfft. A properly designed and installed station will not suffer any significant damage. No need to disconnect anything and you could operate right through.

You and I have both seen that to be true however most people refuse to accept that as reality. Combine that with the unwillingness to take a chance that you did NOT make a mistake in implementing your ground system and the coax cables etc. continue to be disconnected and stations going QRT during a storm. After all you only get one chance at testing it. :D

Just saw this thread and this is something I have been looking for. What is the cost of the SPU2 unit?

No idea what the Nautel SPU2 costs. I have a used/surplus unit I got for free. IIRC they were in the $500-600 range YEARS ago. They are made by a broadcast transmitter manufacturer to go along with their transmitters when purchased. I am not even sure that the general public can purchase on, they probably can biut who knows. The replacement MOV's however are carried by major electrical supply dealers. A better option for general use may be available at Home Depot. I am in Canada but here is a link to a product available here and likely there as well. Disregard the price as it is Canadian$.
