A friend of mine has a Golden Eagle Mk IV-A that is transmitting 3 channels off frequency. Receive is fine. But here's the kicker, Channel 12 is un-effected. So for example if you tune the radio to Ch.14 it transmits on Ch.17. and 3=6 and son on. EXCEPT for channel 12. Any ideas? is the PLL chip gone?

To determine this you would need to confirm if the PLL (IC701) is receiving the correct binary input on pins 9 through 17 for the channel in question. Most radios use a channel selector switch to encode the PLL for the right channel. Since this radio uses an up down switch there are several other chips in front of the PLL that come into play here. Specifically IC801 is responsible for supplying the correct code to the PLL.

I was not able to locate the BCD channel chart for this PLL and it is required to confirm where the problem is. That chart gives a list of ones and zeros for each channel. Ones should have around 5 volts on the IC pin while zeros will be close to 0 volts. If this sounds like Greek to you, send the radio to a tech that specializes in the older tube equipment. Some of the chips in this PLL circuit are CMOS and very sensitive to static electricity. Someone that was unqualified could easily turn this valuable collectors item into a basket case.

Did he just get the radio? If you tune a MKVla with the cage off & then put it back on it will be 3 ch off. 238

I don't know what your expertise is but if you decide you need to get the Browning repaired by another get in touch with Mike at.. mudduck_1@netzero. Com this gentleman is not a golden screwdriver and has the fastest turnover. Anyone needing repairs on tube/transistorized equipment send him a message. Good luck.
We actually just found the controller IC (IC 802) has corroded pins and one is broken

I have a mark 4A. if I remember correctly mine done the same thing. it was one of the chips, maybe ic802. I know one of them is a chip that was programmed by browning when they were made, ( maybe the pll). this ic is very very hard to find. the other one that mine needed was a binary multiplier. I bought a few extras, but I cant remember the part number. if you want to look on it and post the part number, I will look I may have a spare for ya. the one my rig used was not a special ic, it was plug and play. please forgive me if I am off a little, im trying to go by memory. I rebuilt mine about 4-5 years ago. it is still going strong. it had sat in a garage for 25-30 years, in the boxes. I bought it not working and done a total recap, and a few other things. it looks like new it is a beauty, and I love talking on it.
good luck
