Excatly..the cord may be from a Tug9 stand. I'd replace the element and cord with a 4 conductor version, use the pic I posted and to wire it correctly and go from there.

Just for info there is a date stamped or printed on the base of just about every D104 mic, usually on the schematic.
It is possible to use a more conventional mic element even an electric condenser element with the correct voltage this is usually 1.5 to 3 volts. The original D104 mic element is more or less an electric element but larger diameter. Holes do not mean much but can alter the frequency, less bass.

Can't remember all the details but I believe there used to be a mod for those floating around that involved poking holes in the element.

on a lot of the older tug stands the date stamp doesnt mean much i have seen where bottoms have been changed just because one was in better shape,,,we have a fellow here local that buys up broke and old tug stands and d104 heads and refurbishes them,,, when he cleans them up the dates stamp on the schematic is cleaned off... he orders the replacemant elements from mouser ,,,,the electronic parts is just what he cannibalizes from other mikes....

hot rod the stand he has,, has had the cord changed it is a tug8 which should have just 4 wires but has a tug9 stand cord on it,,, he needs to check how it is wired up and just get it in proper order...

the wires 1 i listed is for a 6 wire tug9. he needs to check make sure
there wired up like this. only difference is the 6 wire has a blue which goes
together with shield. other than that all other wires are the same

I picked this mic up for 20 bucks. I'd like to try it on my president Washington, right connector, but it doesn't work. I took the grill off the top, and it looks like the element has some holes in it. Also the white and yellow wires at the base are not connected to anything. Thanks for any advice! Cheers!
I've never seen one before but back in the day it was common for cber's to pass the word around that punching a few pin holes in the crystal element and this would some how give the mic a better sound. It looks as if this may come from a believer who took it a bit to far. Looks like a fork was used. Just another snake oil myth. I ordered one of those replacement elements from RBMicro.com. I'll post my results when it's installed. I added RBMicro 's page and the astatic wiring manual for just about every cb made. Good luck.
