Stryker SR -955 hp

It depends on your voice. Some sound good on the stock mic but it's a little bassy for me. I use a d104 hand mic with mine. My d104 has been modified to enhance the lows a bit.

My SSB receive is fine. I keep the rf gain at 3:00 because the rx is sensitive. Maybe if I ran it wide open the SSB receive will go to hell. Everything I have the equipment to test was right out of the box. Once the shielding issue was resolved everything was good.

The only thing I did different than the service manual was to set the max AM carrier to 10 watts vs the 12 or 15 they specify. The AM waveform looked much better with a little more headroom. I really like the radio...it's a shame I don't use it more often.

Well I had my Stryker in my 2001 Z71 with a Wilson 5000 mag mount. Im not a tech so I will keep it simple. On AM... May as well have superglued my fingers to the RF Gain knob becuase it would need constant adjustment. Not that it mattered because a little to the right and everything was distorted... A little to the left and the guy next to you could be screaming and I couldn't hear it. On SSB my SWR would peg out and the radio would go into SWR PROTECT mode. Turn the SWR PROTECT off and there was a carrier on SSB. I did notice that with the truck running-14.4v- it showed these symptoms even more than when the truck was off-12.6v-

Anyway then I screwed up... I was fed up with the radio driving through west TX and stopped at a tire shop that had a "cb tech" thinking I might trade it. Got talked into an "alighnment" and about a week later it popped a fuse in the power cord. Replaced the fuse with the same amp rating -10A- and smoke came out the sides of the radio. Now it sits in its box on the shelf. And my wallet is about $500 lighter.

Edit. PS. I now run a Galaxy 99v2 for about two weeks now. So far so good.

I have the 655
I love my stryker. I have only gotten good reports. I used to run it in my truck with a noise cancelling mic. Not many would believe it was out of the box radio.

I have no idea why I didn't get the 955.

Results vary by technician.

QUOTE="skip searcher, post: 539510, member: 2166"]What's the standard mic like that comes with the radio like does it sound better with a noise cancelling or power mic .[/QUOTE]

My subwoofer must be broken or someone kicked that radio between the knees. Mine sounds warmer through a demodulator and cheap headphones.

Just like bass robs your stereo of power the same is true with two way radios. haven't you ever noticed a married couple taking turns talking on the same radio a great distance away and the only person you can hear is the female and when her husband gets on the radio you can't even hear him key up the radio. same concept. higher frequencies travel further while bass Robs your station of distance. it's all about maximizing your potential with the power you have available. if you're running 50000 watts of carrier on AM you can afford to decrease your efficiency by pumping lots of bass into your signal.

The idiot that originally "tuned" these radios felt the same as you. He likes "punchy" audio. It doesn't get his customers very far.

You can think I'm an idiot if you like. I think I skimmed over enough of that video to get the jist because by the time he got them both out of the box I got bored. A customer sent hard drive some radios that some hack screwed with and he saved the day...right? Are you hard drive getting more free advertisement or just a cheerleader. Even your avatar matches his youtube avatar.

Punchy audio has it's place but what I like is natural sounding AM. When man gets through puberty his voice has natural lows that make it sound warm and pleasant. Do not confuse this with the muffled bass you hear from the trunk of an old car in the bad part of town.

The audio in the video you posted sounded like 42 had a clothes pin on his nose with some distortion that sounds like over modulation. It may not be the radio. It may be how he recorded the audio or RF in the recording equipment.

If that is how the AM audio sounds on the air he might as well be using SSB. A 955 straight out of the box sounds better than any of the test microphones in the video. Maybe Mr Fine Tune did a great job but that video is not flattering.

as unflattering as that radio might sound he gets out about 135 miles in all directions. and the audio on in that video sounds exactly like the guy as if he was sitting in the room with you. not everybody has the same base in their voice. some people prefer a radio that distorts their voice and makes them sound like something they're not. but that was about as high fidelity as it gets.
I couldn't help but chuckle when you mentioned rattling speakers on the bad side of town.

it's entirely possible he might have had the microphone too close to his mouth. everybody has a different way of speaking into a microphone. perhaps you might think he sounds better with a little echo.

I'm not the guy that worked on this radio but all my radios were worked on by the same guy that did this radio.
