A friend of mine got this midland radio at a yard sale for like 10 bucks. Nice lookin little radio, came with stock mic, mounting bracket, and power cord. Good deal right? He gave it to me to give a once over. After a little tweaking, i got 4 watt dead key swinging to around 15 or so with the stock mic and the mic gain wide open. Nice loud clear audio. I changed the mic to my astatic 636,
Barely a whisper heard and almost 0 modulation. Tried a ranger 198, rk56, and a cobra lx stock mic, same thing. All mics are 4 pin cobra including the stock midland mic. What the hell? You can't use an after market nc mic with midland radios? Or am I missing something here?

Crack open the back cover on the stock Midland mic and see if it has a dynamic element or a small condenser element. If it has the condenser element, the audio circuit is designed for high impedance elements, in the neighborhood of 20-50k ohms, and an aftermarket mic with a dynamic element (around 600 ohms) will not modulate the radio properly.

~Cheers~

Thanks exit13, your right on the
money, It has the condenser element. This was the first midland radio I'd ever looked at, I gotta say there is not much there. Everyone that complains how cheap cobra and uniden have gotten need to look in one of these! Glad it was his $10 not mine lol.
Tried my old diesel power mic on it, which also has a condenser element, and it sounded ok. Guess he's got that as an option.

Hopefully someone with a Midland 5001z can help me. My son and just got a pair of these radios. We like them except they sound a bit under modulated, judging by the comments we hear. If I am reading the schematic correctly it seems that pot RV2 and/or D10 control the modulation. Can anyone verify if this is true? My test equipment is limited to a simple % modulation meter.

Not sure about the modulation pots, exit13 will know that info.
As far as mics go, try an RF Limited 2018 extreme or even the CR577. I know the 2018 extreme will bump the modulation up as should the CR577. Those old diesel power mics aren't that bad either sideways. They actually work pretty good for how much they cost. I have an old one and it works great. To the other poster, wait for exit13 or someone who knows about this particular radio to verify modulation VR. As far as mics, try the 2018 extreme or the cr577, should have good results with either of these mics. JMHO. Happy 2016!!

IIRC the modulation vr was marked "mod". It should be rv2 or d10 is the limiter according to another site.
But I wouldnt turn on it too much. Or clip the limiter. I ended up turning the one I was messing with back down. It really muffled the audio when turned up, and sounded like chit.
The stock condenser mic is the best match for that radio if you have it. Though, I didnt have a 2018, or a cr577 to try, as 222 recomended. But those mics cost more than the radio lol...
Good luck
