You probably have the UG-175 reducers for RG-58 which is smaller. You need the UG-176 reducer for the RG-8X cable.

I had a problem with a couch rabbit (aka 'house cat') because he was chewing the TV coax cable. SO, I took some red pepper powder and mixed a little vegetable oil with it, and smeared a thin coat of it on that cable. Couch rabbit no longer chews the cable. Problem solved . . .

Thanks CK, that's exactly the case. Ordered up some new Amphenols with the proper reducers. Will keep others for making jumpers, etc.
can i ask what brand is your coax? i read a post a couple years ago about a guy who had two0 cables laying on the ground side by each and the rodents always chewed one but not the other and one was bedlen and the other was lmr400 but i dont remember which they ate.
Prefer to cook'em in a crock pot with sliced carrots, potatoes, onions, and a bit of seasonings but RF cooked is fine if you're in a hurry!
You could use burial grade coax or run the sections on the ground thru some grey electrical PVC conduit pipe.
Personally, I would use N connectors. They will seal up better and have less loss. A bit overkill for 27 mhz yes but the built in seals work great! Just my 2 copper rounds.
