Texas Star 500V vs Davemade 4 Pill

Recently had a local with an old style 2970 (150 ish watts) and he told me he was going to add a Texas Star 350 Hiiii Driiiiive and really kick some butt.

Oh yeah, that is going to work well......
Been there, done that (accidently of course), the TS 350 only took one key down when I realized my mistake..... had DEI's in it, New Toshiba's were in order .....

Had one customer who had me install a red LED just inside the headphone jack. It's connected to the Suicide Switch. Lights up when the internal linear is active.

Had to give him credit for a good idea.

I have occasionally run a 2970N2 in AM mode with the power turned down into a Heavy Duty real Toshiba 2sc2879 (4) pill box with surprisingly good results. With the AMP at a maximum 110-120 watts DK, that set up would swing nicely with the N2 in front of it. Not really much different than running a HD 2x4.

Would I run it this way all the time? Hell no, as the peaks were very high and I want my amps to last. Duty cycle, available amperage, supply voltage, proper heat sinking & cooling coupled with transistor quality all play a factor here. I would not recommend even trying this set up unless you had an HD box with the real dealeo Toshiba 2879s in it, haha. Magic smoke.

Not a good idea. Either buy more amp to match up to the power output of the 2970N2 or buy less radio to match up to the amp. Here goes a novel idea you could run the 2970N2 without a un-needed 4 bjt transistor amp behind it.

In a way I have the same issue on a smaller scale. I have a new 2950CD turned down to .5-4w on the dk front variable. But I have backswing on average power meter.
I was trying to drive my well loved Cobra 2x2879 but it seems to be and others have advised that its still to much radio for that amp. Will a TX Star 500 face the same issue or is my radio tame enough? I do use sideband so the class C stuff is out.

The 2950 CD should work fine as long as it has not been super duper tuned. By this I mean if say your radio dead keys 1.5 watts on AM and swings 10-18 watts it should be fine. If it swings out to 40plus watts from a low key then yea that's a problem. Same for SSB, if you can dial the radio down below 20 watts peak your Cobra amp should be fine. I bet even 8-12 watts SSB input would work well with that amp.

I tuned it myself fresh out of the box.
Or detuned rather I backed DK power way off and swing about 15 watts from 1 watt dk.
But I backswing out of the cobra on a brand new dosey test center on avg power. On peak setting great forward swing. Maybe the backswing is false? I dont know.

Back swing means that it is being overdriven. If you watch it on a scope, you will see that there is no growth of the signal's envelope. The peak forward swing is harmonics of intermodulation distortion (IMD) and probably ten channels wide. The amp won't live long like this.

I realize I cant run it without destroying it. Its not a TX star that I own its a lovely blue face Cobra 350 2x original toshiba 2879s. I am not running it under those conditions. I was testing the new radio to see if I could and the answer is no as you all have pointed out. The Cobra 350 was from my boxes of stuff 20 years ago paired to a grant XL I sold. I'll have to get a 4 pill I guess the 2950 is too hot for it .
I use ssb as well so the class C stuff is out I assume. That leaves used stuff or TX STAR stuff I assume? I have been gone a long time I dont know who still builds AB 1 mobiles if anyone... Besides RM FET boxes and TX STAR?

Carl. isn't he the original Xforce guy?
So class C can be half way ok on ssb?
I'm not into the overdriven splatterfest.

These builders can bias AB as an option. I have an XForce 4 pill and a Carl Built 4 pill, both AB bias. The XForce on a Stryker 955 and the Carl on a President Madison. Both get good reports on AM and SSB.
