Is it me or do most of the Royce radios just flat out suck? Not even my tech likes them. He says they are a joke HOWEVER only one is worth a flip the 642 Am SSB deluxe base... I have had a few AM 40 Ch bases and they were a joke. 4 watts out 5 watts pep.. Really? LOL!! My Cobra 19 plus blows them away... Anyone else have the problems i have had?? Not trying to piss anyone off...... lol

I like the 619. It's not a world-beater, but I found it to be a dependable, nice-looking CB. And if you ever happen to accidently hook it to a paint-shaker and shake the hound out of it for a few minutes, it'll still work after you realize your mistake and remove it.

Radio technology has made some improvements in the 40 years since the last Royce CB was made.

Royce competed with 100-plus brands of 23-channel CB radio. Wasn't the worst of those days, by far.

When 40 channels came around, it hit them the same way it hit the rest of the industry, and they were gone.

They built some dogs, and some radios that still compare well to a modern unit.

I'll grant them one good point. The owner's manual usually came with a full set of schematic and parts-placement diagrams, parts list and alignment details.

Haven't seen that in a while.

It’s unfair to broad brush any brand name as being good or otherwise, particularly when they have produced so many different board variations. Some techs today might not like the Royce simply because of their unfamiliarity or because they don’t want to bother re-capping an entire radio. Radios of that vintage need electrolytic cap renewal. Did you realize that the Cobra 19 plus model you mentioned used two radically different circuit boards inside? I won’t go into all the pros and cons of each one, but I prefer the metal cased one with the oddball plug on the back (Korea). Also, too many people judge a radio by looking at the transmitters output. How well it receives (signal to noise, squelch action, IF filtering, ect) is a far better way to judge. A good tech can make just about any radio transmit efficiently or sound good on the air. If necessary, the transmit side circuitry is far easier to change, including the mic. Receive side, not so much.

Sorry she didn't swang hard enough for you :(
My Royce 1-673 is doing well... It's not a Cobra 29 GTL, and I accept that.
But she is well built, reminds me of an APC. (armored personnel carrier)

I agree with many comments in this thread, they can appear "harder to repair", & they can sound awesome after the right person has had a go. Super clean AM out of the box, while it couldn't produce 100% modulation at 4 watts carrier (with original caps).

I think I could/should modify a Royce 1-673 to use a MosFet final, that'd be fun.

Sorry tossed in the trash....
Next time, drop it off to a tech. Any tech worth his salt will appreciate the parts. Knobs if they are in good shape, not to mention any mounting brackets you have. Like a kidney or a heart, parts radios help keep the old school radios alive.
