A friend of mine just came frim the Dayton Hamfest and sent some pics of 2 new radios. The Kenwood TS-890 and the Yaesu FT-101D.

The Yaesu is a SDR but surprisingly Kenwood didn't jump on that band wagon.

Street price for the 890 is expected to be around 2,500 to 3,000. Not sure on the Yaesu.

I went through the Kenwood and Yaesu areas indoors on Friday afternoon and both of the new radios were drawing a crowd. The Yaesu was sitting out where the back was visible while the Kenwood was more difficult to see the back.

I'm not anticipating being in the market for a radio in that price range. But I am very happy to see both companies continue to roll out new models of amateur gear.

Even if you aren't going to be buying one of these or the Icom 7610 and 7300 it still helps drive down the prices of other used gear. I'm happy to let other guys buy the new toys since that puts a lot of very nice rigs on the used market.

I looked at the new stuff at the Hamvention and went out to flea market to spend my dollars.

Where's the POWER switch?

Too many buttons!

Worse than Wonkavator....

Both radios have the power switch in the very top left corner. The Yaesu is labeled ON/OFF and the Kenwood is labeled with a standard symbol for power. It looks like a 0 with a small 1 at the top. I was actually thinking neither radio has enough buttons. the more buttons the less you have to dick around with menus.

I am really liking the way the FTdx101D is laid out. Dual/simultaneous receivers with individual controls front panel for both. The updated dual display, though touch screen looks nice. I am not a big fan of touch screens, but using a external touch screen would save marring up the radio's. I do think it is only going to be 100w transmitter, shame...was hoping for a 200 watt version, like the FTdx5000 and 9000 among others Yaesu has had in the past. Personally I am impressed by what I have seen so far. Plus with all the extra features for it to be priced only a little more than the FTdx3000D MSRP when it first was introduced, I will be looking forward to it's release.
Unless something changes I think like the FTdx3000D, Yaesu has hit another HOME RUN with the FTdx101D !.

PS: I like also the 5 meg and 70cm bands already set-up on this radio's front panel!+++

(Sorry late post - this is what I get for running a In-Home In-Law Day-Care Geriatrics center for (did I say that?) Moms...)

It's got some VERY EXPSENSIVE buttons!

Expensive indeed!

Should have known - when I looked, I thought it said STANDBY...

Got tired of waiting...

Sounds like the Hamfest was fun...I don't always have those moments to get to these shows but when I do - You'll find me in the junk - Bulk bins looking about for SO-239's PL-259's Feedthrus - coax...maybe a trip over to see Ten-Tech...

Nothing serious I just have more fun building - it's what I want.

I was actually quite restraint at HAMVENTION. I passed on a couple deals, one I should have pulled the trigger on.
I passed on a beautiful set of newly restored High SS# Drake "B" line twins(T4XB/R4B). The owner had the receipts for $500 worth of restoration work done in last 6 months on these radios, and by a well known excellent restorer. All the extra Xtals installed to have them cover all the WARC bands and 160m. He offered the "Twins" plus manuals, all new interconnect cabling, power supply with updates for transmitter. A second working T4XB transmitter and supply, an original Drake Desk Mic... ALL for $550 cash...I went back couple hours later and He and the rigs were gone.
OH well. I did get some amp project parts and some other small project trinkets but brought no big items home.(also passed on a clean set of KWD 599D Twins for $350)
I actually have my sights set on a second New FTdx3000D...and now may delay that in Lieu of waiting till end of year for this new FTdx101D.
All the Best
Gary
