Sirio gainmaster

Expensive is my only thought. I know guys that run them. They seem to like them. Seem flimsy to me???

I'm entertaining putting up a Maco V5000. Had the original Avanti Sigma version in the 70's, hope the Maco version to be the same. Even the 2000 watt rated version is half the price of the Gainmaster. Since I am wanting to put this in a 75' tall pine tree (paying someone else to do the climb!) I don't want to have to "redo" this in a year or two (flimsy upper element???), so I'm figuring to use something that is proven and I have had prior experience with. I don't use more than 150 watts currently so it's not an issue of power handling ability but once the next Solar cycle is in full bloom…………………..The insulator at the base is teflon instead of plastic(?) on the 2000 watt version.

I have had a couple of Antrons but they are very noisy on receive (3 different installations in 3 different states). Broadbanded, but too noisy for my liking.

Presuming you're referring to the 5/8 gain master (not the 1/2 wave version) if you go to http://www.gain-master.it/vsconventional.php you'll see a couple options to click on which show an active color representation of the currents on a normal 5/8 bottom fed versus the 5/8 gain master and this shows the gain master has it all over the others by being fully in phase, but it's also a balanced center fed dipole so anything significant near it can negatively affect its pattern and performance.

If you're talking about installing one on the top of a tree, I'd think that would possibly be the ultimate installation for the gain master, especially if on top of a pole well above the upper branches, so long as it's not too close to other treetops or treetop antennas.

Personally, I don't know how you'd beat a fully in-phase 5/8 vertical omni with any other, unless you need less of a flat radiation angle and more of an upper angle if you're dxing, especially if shorter dx conditions, so maybe all of us should also have a maco v58! ;)

Never had one, but Marconi a member on this site has done some side by side comparisons with the gainmaster and other popular type verticals.

Results were eye opening.

hard to beat a simple 1/4wl direct fed vertical, bang for the buck starduster gives you more for your money. But it is not broad banded so if you looking for a fishing pole in the air type antenna that is multi banded then the I2K and A99 will fit the bill.

Old school ( A-99 ) my upgrade from a Big Stick that got shattered . But a local op purchased a Collasal ( spelling ) sounds great on am and ssb and the receive is awesome ( according to him ) but too much $ for my wallet .Regardless of what is said about Sirio I have a 27-4 still in the box waiting for help to put it up ( after over 1 year ). Not many ops in my area interested in going on my roof .:eek:o_O:LOL:

greetings,
i have liked making and fiddling with antennas through out the years since i was a kid.
But these days as i get old or older i appreciate this plug and play antenna. It's getting harder for me to climb roofs and lower and raise antennas. I don't climb trees anymore like I used to either...I bought a gainmaster several years ago and can use it on both 10 and 11 meters. Thanks to my son, i was able to set it up. I don't work 12m but others say they use it on 12 also.

that having been said only you will be able to determine whether this antenna will work for you at your particular location. it's a bit pricey but has worked well for me. Best of luck with your choice, enjoy the hobby.

Just few links to find Info on how to roll your own.

You can get as elaborate as you like or as simple as you like,
Save a few $$ and probably have a stronger and if not better at least equal to performance as anything you can purchase.

EMT 1/2" and 3/4" conduit is available at big box stores for cheap.
Couple of 102" steel whips will make a heck of a Dipole

Roll your own save money and have fun
