This Cobra 2000 came in with the story that a spare-bedroom tech had dropped his screwdriver into the radio.

With the power on.

There was a "SNAP!" and then no more receiver audio.

And no modulation on AM. Sideband transmit still worked.

As someone used to say "Well there's your problem!"

This tech's only response was "I guess the next one you want fixed will be free", as he shrugged and wondered what was wrong.

We also replaced the output capacitor. Got in the habit of doing that any time this chip is replaced. If it's shorted, the new chip will be blown before you can shut off the power.

Lucky for him, this was all that got damaged. New audio chip and cap, works just like it used to.

I found it a lot more amusing than the owner of the radio did.

I have seen a few chips cratered like that. I may or may not have caused a couple to do that in my lifetime too.

Yep, they always blow on the side closest to the chassis too, so you don't see the hole until the part is out. Pretty simple to diagnose though when you have no tx or rx audio. It would just be easier if you could see the damage without working for it.

I'll confess to having dropped a screwdriver into a powered up radio once. Got lucky, the insulated handle hit first and bounced it out before anything got shorted.

Of course it was my own radio, so I'd have been a bit ticked at my tech for that.

I've had those moments. When working on a tube amplifier I put a clip lead from b+ to ground after I discharge the caps. I've forgotten to remove it a couple of times and turned an amp on. Luckily they had a proper glitch resistor and fuses on the primary side of the hv transformer. No harm done except for a fuse.

Knock on wood that I have not dropped a conductive tool inside yet. But I do have a YD1022 here that looks like your pic. Now if I can just find a replacement.... sheesh!

You have to log in to get the price, but they are out of stock. Is that the unobtanium chip that repair shops are saying they can't fix if it's bad? If so, you may be out of luck unless you can find a donor radio.
