I've had good luck with the magnet mount Wilson 1000. But, it is too tall for my carport, so now I go with a 4.5 foot quad wrapped antenna. I think you will enjoy that radio, just might need to add a rm203 behind it to help making those dx contacts.

I've talked as far as 60 miles on sideband with my barefoot 980. Of course that was with the other guys having higher elevations and tall antennas.

Might work, I dont know. They little rm 203 is only about 65 bucks if it burns up you can replace fairly cheaply. Just gotta get the radio dead key down to about 2 watts.

yes thought about them too

I can tell by those flames on the floor mats, you’re a saucy guy, ain’t ya? Hahaha.

It looks good. I’ve never had luck with a Lil’ Will though, never got any range from it on any dump truck we installed them on. Always ended up with a 1000, of course none of those guys did SSB though. Is that what you’re doing the most of?

I use an RM Italy KL203P behind either my Uniden 880 or 885. A real difference.

Without it, using a power mike seems to help. (Astatic D104 is what I carry with me; otherwise an RK56).

I’d also recommend the Uniden BC20 external speaker.

K0BG recommends trying a speaker mounted underdash ahead of driver, aimed downwards. That’s not loud enough in my one ton Dodge diesel, so I revert to the old AM radio speaker position on the dashtop to bounce off of the windshield.

I use a GearKeeper mike hanger attached to the rear view mirror.

For now I use a Hustler hood mount for the antenna or a magnet mount on roof.

I ran power to passenger side battery with termination fuses. 10-2 Ancor in their Fire-resistant split loom.

havent tried am,but on ssb its working great. Im still pondering on my 3ft top load wilson.but i can get 45 or so miles on ssb to a friend so im letting it stay for now

I ran 2 wires from battery to my radio 15 amp blade fuse at + post.got a good external speaker on dash but its visible under radio in the 1 set to green lights

Rwb,

I had a set of those saw tooth brackets, worked real good. Now I only drive standards and no place that set up fits. I miss how the radio was low and out of sight. Current set up is screwed to side of hump, not the best place. Seat will make contact with radio if adjusted forward.

Keep us posted on that linear set up. Friend of mine wants a 980 real bad, and having the information on a good example will be nice.

Have you considered running a 102" whip?
