RCI or Galaxy?

I started to say, was it ethical to suggest a true ham rig when someone was asking about a Galaxy or a Ranger. I was first thinking the OP was gonna talk on 11m with it. Went back and looked and saw where he said mostly 10m.

That brings this question and I know I’m about to get pummeled for this one :

Would any self respecting ham be caught on any amateur band with an RCI or Galaxy? I mean, would you be taken seriously for doing such? And I’m not judging or being an ass, I’m asking a serious question here.

I have used several RCI 29xx radios on ten work great if properly set up , and I have made lots of contacts with them.
I have used exports and converted old cb radios on 10 (an 12) meters in years past with no issues.
I would agree that if the OP's question was only CB related I would have picked the RCI option of the two. But for a entry level operator and at the price point of the radios listed I feel the money would be better invested in a multi band radio.
The general test is not that difficult and with a little more study most can pass easy.
One will get much more enjoyment from the HF radio that will allow you to work band openings on other frequencys when ten is dead.
If you are a seasoned operator that already has a multi band radio and just want a ten meter rig because you like that band...

I used to run a connex 4800 on 10/12 back in the day.. light tune w an astatic 636. Never had a ham on a "real radio" complain about audio quality or bandwidth. Just had to make sure my echo and beep was turned off...10-4

Well again, I wasn’t trying to be an A-hole. I went and upgraded to General. I casually mentioned RCI and they looked at me like I had a goat head for a hat. Kinda goes along with the other thread about hams and all, they didn’t seem to like the words coming outta my mouth.

I know other hams that laugh openly when you mentioned any of those radios, that’s why I asked.

Biggest thing I see here is like Shockwave said, you’d be radio ahead for the money you’re talking about. 10 stays dead more than alive or so it seems around here. You’d probably have some fun on 40m at night but the RCI won’t get you there.

Yes most of us old guys make grumpy old ham faces when you mention roger beep or galaxy radios. lol.
I never did care.
I run what I had that got me there.
10 is not always dead.
There has been some short skip working north south out here on the west coast. I can often hear the beacon down in San Diego lately on ten.
Oh
And I talked to Larry DX man up in the north west corner a couple nights ago..and 695, Stan in Hawaii night before last on .385 lsb
10/11 is open more than most think.

Not a ham here so the usual disclaimers apply.

I used to listen in on the ham bands with a general coverage receiver quite a bit. I've heard many times where someone would be talking and getting good reports on his signal, then he mentioned that it's an RCI he's talking on and everything changes. If for some reason the Galaxy and RCI were your only choices I would say go RCI but don't tell anyone what you're talking on.

That being said if you have a ham ticket I would say get the full on ham rig and plan on upgrading to general, if you're already going ham there's no reason to stop halfway in.
