Does anyone have any insight as to why people would bid up an item hours before auction end? I understand a single bid to get rid of a buy it now option, but otherwise I am dumbfounded. It is like they don't really want a deal, they just want to drive the price up and get everyone's emotions pumping.

Shill bidding. It has happened to me before too.

I had a Grant XL New Old Stock for sale on Ebay for a buy it now price of $200 plus $20 insured shipping.....no buyers.
Two weeks later someone was auctioning an NOS Grant XL with a starting bid of $100.....well the bidding went up to $375. I gave up selling on ebay after that.

Found this on ebay with 1 shill bid already placed.

I was bidding on a El Camino that was only about 50 miles from my house. I maxed out my bid at $800.00. did not bid again. It was a rust bucket that you could toss a Dr. Pepper can in the back and it would hit the ground it was so rusty. Well the shill bidders kept running it up. The winning bid was over $3000.00.
The next day I get a phone call from eBay and the seller of the car was on the line too. He was demanding I pay him for his car at a much higher price than I would pay for a doubtful vehicle. I told them My last bid was $800.00 and would honor that.
The seller exploded say no way! The eBay person said ."Well his highest bid was 800 so at this point it is take the 800 or leave it. I also mentioned that I felt there was shill bidding going on and the vehicle was not worth the 800 I offered. The seller had some choice words and hung up. Mr eBay said he was sorry for bothering me and promised there would be an investigation into this situation. I said good luck and hoped the would find all of the evidence to ban the seller and the shills.
The shills got in to a bidding war against each other.

It's called "sniping"...You wait till the last minute to start bidding, and try to out-bid the other person at the last second...Or you can set your automatic bid at whatever the top price is that you would pay for a item, and then the system will bid for you every time someone else places a bid...

Like if something is priced at 50 bucks, and you set your automatic bid at $200, then once someone places a bid of $55, your automatic bidder will place a bid for you for the next lowest bid allowed...then if that person comes back and out bids you again, system will again turn around and bid for you with the next lowest bid...It will keep this up till either the auction ends, or the system reaches your highest bid of $200 (or whatever you set the MAX at)

Correct, this is the best way to start biding wars and drive prices up. Why would buyers want to drive the price up? Seems counterproductive.

I do not use the auto bidding process. I will sit there on line watching and at the last seconds throw a bid that is the maximum I would consider paying for it. but no auto bidding involved here. Like Mr. eBay said my last bid was $800.00.

It's a good way to bid, without having to sit by the computer all day waiting for a auction to end....Sometimes you get a good deal under what your willing to pay, sometimes you get left out in the cold with someone beating your high bid by 5 bucks.
