Yaesu FT-857D FT-897D 857 897 Frequency modification expansion

I modded my 857 and I manually put in offset all works great..but that's all I know..I've never had a radio with ARS..now I just need to find out why I cant bring down the swr on 11 meters

Ok. 2m 70cm was fine..its the antenna. It's just narrow banded I think. Im trying to get 11,and 10meters on a k40 stick..I got it tuned down on 11 now

I never liked physics anyways...I'm not trying to take away from this mod...but i tuned my antenna for 11 meters before and it was good...but it was also on my truck in the shed..then when I went outside it was high. So I put new coax made sure ground is good but it's in the barn...hopfully when I pull it out it will be good...

I tuned an HFantenna for a lower ham band out in my yard one day and it was great. Then the wife came out and jumped into her car and went to work. My SWR was REALLY bad at that point. The proximity of the two vehicles lead to a huge error in tuning.

I was helping out a friend who had some issues with SWR on his repeater network they used for search and rescue up North. He had laid his antenna flat on the second floor balcony and got it tuned. Took it out to the repeater and the SWR was way off. I quizzed him about the make up of the second floor and his answer was concrete. I said rebar must be affecting the tuning. I just told him to get it vertical at the site and keep his snow crawler back at least 50 feet. I told him to get the MFJ antenna analyzer and he liked it so much he went and tuned the whole net work up and the systems has never worked better.

How do those analyzers work? I seen some guys on you tube do a comparison with base cb antennas. They just showed the numbers and said " there is is".

It has a signal generator built in and it puts out whatever frequency you want. It also has a swr meter built in. Some of the newer mfj model have a digital meter instead of just a analog meter face and tells more than just swr. It gives a resistance figure along with if it is capactive or inductive. They are worth the money you spend if you are a ham operator.
It is an outstanding piece of test equipment to have.
