The Stupidest Idea Ever

I love it for the hell of it, but I'd never want one. These amps built into the radios have never made any sense to me. Running any export into an external amp has worked well for me for 30+ years with one failure. That was a small 2 pill amp that I found out has mis-matched transistors in it. I had no clue what I was looking at at the time and I think I had paid all of $30 for it, so it was a throw away for me until I picked up another Texas Star.
Now I have 4 functional TS amps, 2 dead (got burned on Ebay), a 2 x 2290 Dave and a KLV 1000.
I just don't see the need for doing that to a radio, but I applaud it and I await patiently for the Earth shattering KABOOM!! :D:D:D:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Magnum/RFLimited made what they called 'Power Cases' (?) about a decade ago.
IIRC, they were built to power radios that used a single final output into a mosfet amp built into the bottom case.

Sooo, your idea isn't so stupid.
The trick is getting the power output from the radio turned down enough so that you don't fry the amp board.
If you can do that, I don't see a reason why it shouldn't stay together and work indefinitely.

You can’t turn it down, that’s the problem. When you do turn it down, you’re only seeing about 200 watts peak. What’s the point of that behind a radio that already will do 80-100 watt peak? None. That’s one reason I say it’s stupid.

I remember the power cabinets. And if you remember that, Magnum also had S9 300’s I believe or something like that. There was another one too, slips my mind, been a long day. And if I remember all that correctly, they were hooked to a 50 watt S9 with dual finals. But of course it wasn’t a 100 watt radio, this is absolutely a for fun and the lulz project.

The “chill” that’s coming is also only for the fun of it, the thrill, and plain ole stupidity. I’m only doing it because of a conversation Mark and I had but there will be issues with that as well.

It’s fun to talk on and it looks cool, around here it’s definitely one of a kind, nobody else has one. I do imagine I could sell it easily on eBay but I just can’t do that, for several reasons.

Oh, one thing left out, this bottom has 1446’s in it because it’s from a Connex 4300-300. For even more lulz there will be one coming with 2879’s in it but I don’t expect much improvement over what it is now.

This is stupid. I couldn’t build this and sell it and sleep good at night.

Robb, for the lulz. Just because I could, because it was laying around in the shop and I thought “why not”. If it blows sky high, I’ll fix it. If it miraculously holds together, great. If not, I really don’t care.

Most of the time just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. But sometimes, sometimes, you should just for the hell of it. That’s what this is.

Sure it makes sense.

Like one of my neighbors put a 4-bolt small block V8-400 4V in a Vega back in the mid-1970s

None of us could stop laughing.

He narrowed a 12-bolt. Found tires that sorta fit (going as low-key in appearance as possible). Surprised many.

He smoked it but good. Right until those launches LITERALLY started to tear the sheet metal apart.

Wheelstand anyone?
.

Well the “bigger is better” way of looking at it, yeah it makes sense. I like it, the cool factor is definitely up there, everyone that’s come into my shop and seen it just loves it and wants one.

I also have a new 2950DX with the color display that I’ve put an RFX95HD on, it was also for laughs and fun. But between the two, the 955 is better on SSB but neither has had any alignment or anything of the sort done (yet). It’s an “on hold” project and probably will be sold, it’s running and works 100% though.

If you remember, there was a video of an AT-6666 running without an antenna and the 13N10’s did not explode. So with that in mind, the 520’s in this radio were swapped for 13N10’s and a slight power increase seemed to result. Of course, it didn’t need that but if it helps to increase longevity and/or durability then so be it. We shall see. I’m hopeful just because, my consultants say to expect fireworks sooner or later.

Today is day 5 and it’s still alive.
