New Icom IC-9700 2m/440/1.2 All mode Transceiver

Good points,

At Least the newer 7610 has a video out so you can use an external monitor when the screen burns out.

I didn't notice a video out on this radio. My Icom 7000 has one and I use it in my mobile and works geat with a cheap 7 inch $40 LCD monitor. You almost need one because of the 2.5 inch screen on the 7000.

That may not be so. It depends upon where the feed comes from in the radio. You might be able to do it with lots of radios using other types of screens but when my ICOM 756 PROII screen failed the radio was a door stop. I don't like external monitors as my screen & why I have an all in one radio in my ICOM 7600. I do not want another screen nor do I need a bigger screen. I have great eye sight after having Lasik Surgery years ago & the screen on the 7600 is plenty big enough for me. I had the ICOM 7000 for several years & I tried the external screen in my mobile & removed it because it was unneeded for my wants & needs.I kept it around & sold it to the new owner when I sold it. Besides that the 700 has the clearest & easiest screen of any mobile radio to see & the color makes it even better & clearer than an external monitor due to the number of pixels in the display giving great resolution. It also took up space I could use for other things just like the big external monitors in a shack. NOT for me. Many people don't need them but they think they look Cool & that is more important than functionality these days it appears. If anyone really needs that big of a screen on a radio they should see an Eye Specialist ASAP on a serious note. It's a bunch of Hype.

I hear what you say. If the display goes out on most radios, it is now useless. But, I would rather use an external display on a radio that has a video out just like your 7600 and the new 7610 and a few others that do than be out an otherwise good radio. And don't think your 7600 display couldn't burn out one day.

What's most likely to happen with many of these new touch screen radios is they will probably last for years but by then the radio will already be obsolete along with new parts and manufacture support for them. These will them become legacy models to make way for the newer models.

As for my IC-7000, I like my external display because I keep it on top of the dash in front where I'm always looking ahead while driving so I don't have to turn my head to see it in the radio head's present location. It's also a nice clear screen the exactly mirrors the original display and I really enjoy using it. A 2.5 inch screen is rather small and I can see it but the 7 inch screen is far easier and that to me is important driving a Big rig while operating a mobile HF radio.

Here is a older pic of my mobile. I drive a different truck now which has limited dash space but I still have the monitor in the same general area.

I am glad that Icom made the investment in designing and bringing the IC-9700 to market. Hopefully that will encourage Kenwood and Yaesu to make similar efforts.

Having options other then rigs like the TS2000 is great.

My antenna situation is kind of limited, so I'm not a hardcore VHF DXer. But I like to play on 2m during contests and band openings. I currently have both an Icom 275 and the 910. So I can wait for early reviews of the 9700 and also for the street price to stabilize.

I waited until the IC-7300 dropped in price and got what I felt was a great deal.

Also not particularity worried about a touch screen. I use my phones a lot more then any radio and haven't had any problems with their screens. Also as a last resort a person could always use something like Ham Radio Deluxe for radio control.

I am seeing lots of postings on the web about some issues with frequency stability already? It is suppose to be a Digital Dream Radio & it drifts like an Iceberg in the Gulf Stream.Digital modes will not work with that so it rules out EME Contacts as well.

Not ordering one anytime soon...(no $)... BUT it still has some very nice features. From what I hear the receiver is awesome and for what I would use it for it would be cool to have on the desk. I'm SSB dude all day and could care less about WSPR. Give it some time and let things work themselves out with some firmware updates... maybe an atomic GPS reference fix.. we will see..

Are there other reports of similar instability? Just wondering how precise their tests were. I've no experience in data modes. My wife's cousin is supposed to come school me.

I have to wonder if others are having similar issues, as you'd think ICOM beta dudes would've caught that. Wouldn't be first time big 3 pushed a known turd thru. I'm still waiting on Yaesu to update the 891's nonsensical bugs.

I'm curious to see what the new vhf/uhf all mode Kenwood offering will be since the 2000 finally ceased production..?

Hopefully they don't exit the market. I've always been partial to Kenwood gear. Love my 590SG. Trying to convince myself I need a 890S. :sneaky: My wallet and wife doth protest!

The IC-9700 really had my interest. Been following several online threads about the stability issues. I am a digital guy -the reports coming out about the 9700 are disappointing.

The Dayton (Xenia) special for $1699 shows the direction that the price is going to end up at. I'm willing to be patient and let the early adopters and Icom sort out any technical issues.
Meantime my 910 well more then get me by until the 9700 price settles.

I don't know but I took my ICOM 275A off of my desk last week & replaced it with a KENWOOD TS-2000. It is the 1st KENWOOD HF Base radio that I have ever owned though I have zero plans of using it on HF/6 meters at all. I purchased it for VHF/UHF SSB & maybe a little FM usage. There is nothing wrong with my 275A but of course it does not have UHF & I wanted something different on my desk & ICOM had nothing I was interested in & for sure not the Overpriced & Overrated 9700.The TS-2000 appears to work just fine & it looks great sitting on the desk below the ICOM 7600. {:>) The specs on the 9700 don't take into account the rig getting very warm yet the numbers are not impressive at all & for digital use such as EME & other modes it has already gotten many poor reports & I understand the ICOM booth was buzzing this past week with lots of questions that were left unanswered by many.
